i dont mind shit graphics. i dont even mind no graphics at all (completely text based)... but when the graphics are so bad that they dont even attempt to make things look like what they are, and instead use little symbols representing stuff... and i dont understand at all why the mouse is completely unused :| the difficulty or learning curve arent even the problem... but it would make things so much easier just to let you use the mouse for things. trying to play on a laptop is rediculous :\

you cant even tell that the dwarves are anything but little smiley faces O.O

oh, and yes, you just got attacked by a zombie fire-donkey-dragon, but all you see is a little bland picture, and the only way you know it is anything but a dragon is by what it is called in the game.

the game has a LOAD of potential. more than a load. it would be an amazing game... if it had just enough graphics for you to know what is happening without having to resort to interpreting symbols.

i was looking forward to it very much, but the way the game navigated in the menus before you actually play should have tipped me off that it wasnt going to be worth it. it made me sad :(

first, nice double post

second, phoebus graphic pack

third, dont be retarded and you'll learn

fourth, DF motto (losing is fun)

fifth, it is an amazing game if you let graphics decide how good a game is i feel sorry for you. you cant do all the complex things in dwarf fortress and still have amazing graphics. lets not forget this is a totally free game you spoiled bastard.

first, i didnt notice i double posted. it happens.

second, i saw one of the graphics packs people recommended, and it made it slightly better.

third, i wasnt retarded, i had no problem learning. it would have taken a bit more time to learn it inside and out, but i figured out enough.

fourth, so to have fun i must lose?

fifth, you are entitled to your opinion, and i never bashed your opinion. can you please... please look at the game this forum is dedicated to :| i dont need sweet graphics. i dont need graphics at all. you can do just as much complex things as dwarf fortress allows and still have amazing graphics, even though, as i said before, i dont need amazing graphics. yes its a totally free game, and that is wonderful, but i dont know how that relates to me being spoiled :| h&h is a totally free game, and yet the developers somehow managed to give the graphics some measure of charm, so that somebody who hasnt played before can look at the game, and understand what something is or isnt.

i dont think that everybody must have my opinion, or that my opinion is pure fact. thats simply how i personally feel about the game.

i got super excited because i love the complexity of the game, i love the concept... but what if h&h was just basically a series of menus represented by symbols? perhaps you would love it, but thats not my cup of tea.

and btw, lets not forget our manners, "bastard".

One of the purposes of the poor graphics is to leave something to the gamer's imagination. It's fun to embelish stories! (And lose of course)

valid point.. but in that case, what is the point of graphics? would elder scrolls be better if it had 8 bit graphics?

Multiple perspectives is the point. Graphics can be great for games. Games can also be great without graphics. You'll get a different experience from the two and that is something worth treasuring.

No. The game is about the journey and trying different things, having different goals. The point is that the game progressively ramps up in difficulty until one of two things happen: you're fortress is overwhelmed or your computer stalls out at under 1 FPS trying to crunch all the data from the sheer horde of goblins.

You can certainly "beat" the game, though. A few people have achieved things nobody else has done before. It's hard, slow, and takes a massive number crunching machine to get there, something I don't have. I just enjoy doing occasional adventures and trying to live longer than the last time in my forts.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I've always had interest in trying Dwarf Fortress, but the ASCII graphics seem intimidating to me

That's fair. Would a tile-set help at all? It adds graphics that will help you identify creatures, dorfs, objects, etc.. at the very least.

Also if you are lazy, install the lazy noob pack. It comes with graphic packs along with other option. It is a good way to start.
