I never use a client that gives x-ray vision or night vision, and I frequently run brand new characters on random spawns, so I suspect I have become something of an expert in surviving the wilderness hazards that kill noobs.
I once spawned at RoB in W2 and started hiking, taking the most direct route out of Brodgar which I naturally knew from previous spawns. I played for at least 24 hours straight of traveling as far as possible so I got a looooong way from the center of the map and civilized lands. This entire journey was on foot. And I still survived simply by running to the nearest water whenever I saw a boar, bear or a deer. (Yes, I was under the impression that deer would aggro on sight in those early days.) Unfortunately just as I decided where to settle down for the night the server crashed, and since I had never placed my hearth fire.... the next gaming session began at RoB again. This time my little character settled at an abandoned location quite close to RoB known as "Helms Deep" only to have a large lot of Waynevillains move in on top of me. Wayneville was a village that practiced indiscriminate killing and they had decided to make an impregnable vault for the hearth fires of their team of killers... and they picked my pallisade to do it in!! I left. Quietly.
lol first jtg, then wayneville
