Correct me if I am wrong but isn't it only the client that is in java while the server is in something else? I am sure I remember hearing that though I could be wrong

should just do server in C/C++ and then make a default client in x language and open source it for users to customize or make their own whole client based on default.

One of the best things about HnH is the customized clients and being able to change the UI to your likings and add little helpers along the way to simplify things that weren't in the beginning.

Gee, I wouldn't know anyone that develops an MMO client in Java....

I was thinking of (for the Java3D example) Wurm. Even on a modern machine it's slow slow slow. All the other examples of Java3D programs I've seen are slow, too. OpenGL is great, but the JavaVM just can't execute commands fast enough for a great frame rate if you want any kind of decent graphics.

Honestly, C# isn't a horrible language. Hell, all of the XBox software is programmed in it. Is it my favorite to work in? No, because it's another Microsoft abomination that's overly complex. It can be pretty good if you throw out all the Windows crap and stick to DirectX, though.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
