Check out this goofy river system.. it's like this a few more blocks down too.

This happens when a river runs up against the edge of a "super grid". The world map is generated in chunks called super grids and then these super grids are placed together (3x3/5x5/etc) to form the entire world map. Since each SG is generated independently of the others features like rivers cannot span across. What you're seeing is basically the edge of one SG overlapping where the river should be on the other.
