Assign more dorfs to the hauling job and reduce their other duties if need be. A dorf who is expected to be a carpenter, woodcutter, miner, blacksmith, and a hauler is going to try their damndest to juggle those jobs and will be less efficient at all of them. A dwarf is always going to fulfill their need to eat, drink, and sleep above all other duties though.

Oh gosh, I don't remember these commands off the top of my head.
I think it was something like [c] [v] [n]/[p] to rename your dorfs.
To assign a manager go into the nobility menu with [n] and designate a dorf to be the manager.

so, ive started like, 5 different worlds now.

the first world, i ended up screwing some things up, and not having everything i needed on my fort area...

second world, i ended up with no mountain (and with no understanding of how to build down, or the definition of a "channel", i couldnt build any shelter..) so i had to restart.

third world... i dont remember. it didnt work out.

fourth world, i took way too long to get things going, and before i knew it, it was winter, i didnt have any food or water/alchohol, and everybody dehydrated.

fifth world, before embarking, it told me that there was soil... i get into it, and there is no soil... so no farm for me, so no alchohol for me.. im bout to restart this one now.

my biggest problem now is not understanding how to dig down levels. everywhere says to place a down stairs, and when you shift to the next lowest level, there will be one block revieled that is available... and for me, there is no block revieled on the next lowest level.

::edit::
figured it out. for some reason you can build a stairway to nowhere if you use the building option... but if you use the designation option, it actually goes somewhere :|

Basic designations and constructions. Dorfs only will take jobs they can access so you need to designate a downward stair or up/down stair and have it dug out before they will dig an upward stair designated below that. You need both before they can travel freely.

Kaoru, here's the difference:

When you build stairs, your dwarves take a stone, carry it over to an empty space you want the staircase, and carve it into the shape of a stair.
When you designate stairs, your dwarves dig into the solid rock/dirt and carve out the shape of a stair.

A downward staircase wont allow them to walk on the lower layer. It only allows them to see/dig the adjacent underground tiles. Make sure to designate/build an upward staircase (or a combination up/down staircase) on the layer directly below your downward staircase.

This old picture might help, or it might make things worse :P

lmao while i appreciate the attempt, it might as well be in code...

so... i figured out the digging down thing.... so... i did it, and i dug out a large cavity, which was relatively close to a river that was 1 level higher. i have (appearently, the embark map thingie lied) no dirt whatsoever... so i was going to try to dig through to the water, which of course was stupid... but i figured i could just let the cave fill up, then dig a stairs down in a different area, and reach out to the filled cave, to get some controlled water to produce mud for a farm. as my dwarf broke through to the water, he bounced really quick back up the stairs, and the water was flowing WAY too fast. i had underestimated something :|... at any rate, i was down in that cave for a while with that dwarf, and as he returned to the surface, a cow died in the main hallway. appearently that was just too much for esmirelda to take, and she went stark raving mad, and berserked all over the place, killing my other miner before being killed herself. her lover, the miner that broke into the water a level below, saw this happen, and went mad himself, and decided to sit and starve himself to death. as soon as there were dead bodies, it seemed the entire group just lost their minds. running all over the map... i set up a corpse stockpile... a few corpses were put there initially, but before long, everbody was simply too insane to do anything at all. myasma filled my fort... nick cage... my settlement leader... was mysteriously found dead :\... before i knew it... everybody was dead :|

::Edit::
lmao, 2 people left, and i get a bunch of migrants... who walk in on a huge bloodbath, and say "we wannajoin!"
