Meant to write something to this for quite a while now (btw stop the silly fight about the OP as a person).
The recent forum culture is horrible mostly because of the change in the playerbase obviously. When this game started it appealed only to a small, mature audience. I had never really played an MMO and I was surprised at how "old" the average player in this game was. Old enough that I could have spirited debates about any given topic, but also to create a rich in-game environment with lots of interesting relationships and a vast storyline.
It is probably like with most products. As soon as it becomes popular to a general public it turns bad. Because the general public is stupid. In this case it is also young and stupid. The several channels linking to this game, like 4Chan and other imageboards etc. attract by and large people I do not really want to play a game with.
The first thing I recognize when I look at the game these days is that the average age of the forum users/players has gone down a lot. That does not always have to be a bad thing, usually it is though.
The second thing that is related to this and to the cultural (internet) heritage of many here is the aweful language. I don't mind swearing and heated debates. Most of you here know that. But the forced use and the forced attempt to implement some kind of stupid internet speak here is aweful.
Recently it is mostly this silly Ainran stuff that bothers me ("dunking", "swag", you name it). Not only is their goal in this game as far away as it could possibly be from the intentions the game had in the first place. No, they secondly are also able to go through with this because the game is utterly broken and thus combat is more important than any economic, political, cultural power. Third they use this stupid language to identify themselves and to offer a point of identification. That closes the circle and since in every society children want to be part of the "cool kids" others are adapting to this stupidity and in a last step it is becoming a "thing".
To sum it up. People started finding all the exploits this game has and they used and abused them. That (and other more common ways of spreading informations) attracted a certain crowd to this game. The crowd was able to take over control over important aspects of the game and thus shaped the culture or non-culture we are dealing with these days. Solution: Fix the game and the community will get fixed. Most of the now powerful and influential players will not be able to even maintain the simplest farm then and thus the influential power goes back to a more mature crowd (I fear I may be wrong with that last part btw. Once such a crowd has been attracted it is hard to get rid of again)
P.S: That Yolan thread made me weep a bit. That is what HnH once was. Today people are "dunking" and sit in their chairs chuckling about that great invention of theirs. Sad...
P.P.S.: I was thinking to maybe turn this into some best of thread, though I fear the discussion has led this past the point to turn it into such. Maybe someone can open a "Link your favourite threads" thingie, dunno...
