The difference is that children know very well what the rules are and them destroying the fine carpet or fine plates by just being normal absent-minded children is very different from what is happening in this scenario. That's where the expression "That's why we can't have nice things" comes from, as far as I know: a child destroying/ruining something nice their parents bought.
