That happens. You have lots of really neat things going on in the generation of the history of your world. Demons and monsters can pose as gods, vampires can take office and erect laws that give them protection, and legendary warriors can single-handedly forge an empire. That a vampire open holds that position indicates that they have secured their position in society and attacking them or killing them will only hurt your relations with the humans.

Designate some dorfs to clean that out you lazy bum. Have your mason whip up some cheap caskets to stuff the bodies in so that everyone else is happy about it too. If you don't you're going to get hauntings.

I didn't see this "properly" answered... ;)

While what Teck says works, only a few dwarves will haul if there are higher priority jobs to be done. However, dumping seems to be the highest priority job. Designate a dumping zone/refuse pile. It only needs to be a single tile. The command is 'n'-'g' Zo(n)e->(g)arbage. After that, you can designate items to dump--use (d)esignate->set (b)uilding/item property->(d)ump--and they'll be hauled to the nearest garbage pile. This will pretty much make all your dwarves go pick up items and haul them to the dump. When you need the rock for construction, you can go into you stocks (z menu) and claim the stone type you want (unforbid with 'f') or go to the garbage pile and reclaim a single item through tile inspection 'k' or claim everything on that tile at once--'d'->'b'->'c'

Don't forget to set a garbage dump for all the miscellaneous trash to go to with the same directions as above.

after all the time ive played DF the military system seems to escape me.

like i know how to set everything up but training seems slow. i even did an embark with 6 dwarves prof. in teaching and prof. in once combat skill. most of the time they just did individual drills (i set minimum training personal to 4). Everything was going semi well but of course the only ores i had in my fortress were gold silver and tin ores. should i be more patient delving deeper because the last several times my fort has died to the wave of cave crocodiles and serpent people that spring out of my mining holes. As well i cant seem to find sunberries in any given good terrain. Thanks in advance for advice.

so... i figured out the digging down thing.... so... i did it, and i dug out a large cavity, which was relatively close to a river that was 1 level higher. i have (appearently, the embark map thingie lied) no dirt whatsoever (...)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1kBedai-rk I guess this fits nice for your situation, lol. mild nudity warning

By the way does anyone know if there is a way to move an item from a stockpile to any designation. I just wanted to get my bed moved from stockpile...
