How rare are minerals?

I've been to about 15 caves now and each one has no minerals. Are all the minerals in the world used up or something? I've been playing this game for little over a month and I have yet to see one other person, so its hard for me to believe that all the resources in my area are depleted.

As far as I know, when you choose to "spawn in the wilderness" it generally puts you in around the middle of the map, not the extremes (close to the edges of the world). I had to travel 5 hours from one of these grids just to get to a tin mine.
