Question to Devs - Terrain After Map Reset

Postby kobnach » Sun Jul 26, 2009 10:33 pm

People are posting confidently that resources will be very different after reset. Mines will be rarer, and only in a few area - forcing everyone who wants metal into communication with those areas. Other resources may also be widely separated, making self sufficiency impossible. At least with regard to the mines, the claim is that "the developers have said so". Yet we have a relatively new ability to make our own mines wherever we want.

Hence my question:
1) What is the plan with regard to mines. (Is it planned yet? Is there a general idea?)
2) What is the plan with regard to availability of potentially self sufficient areas?
3) What else can you tell us about you goals for terrain in the new map, other than having it be more interesting?

Thanks,
kobnach

No, noone is posting confidently about them. That is why they are being posted in the Critiques and Ideas forum.

They are ideas.

The thing is that most of the "The developers have said so" are coming from ingame chats with usually Jorb. They are open for suggestions and they don't mind sharing their ideas with us. Thing is that none of what they say ingame can be considered as fact.
I am guilty for making it sound like that before (although the stuff did happen), but you should simply understand it as an idea or thought but nothing official until Jorb or Loftar confirms it.
The ones who see things differently.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

The new map will have new terrain types, rivers, mountains, deep water, streams, prespawned mining points and god knows what else we might think of. The point is that the current map generator does not produce interesting enough maps, quite simply, and needs work. Loftar has also mentioned rewriting the map format, but that is on his table.
Emphasis mine.

Prespawned, building your own mines is still very likely in the future.

i couldn't tell you where i heard it, but i'm pretty sure the ideas are that there are going to be "minning points to build mines" like there are "water points to build wells"... i have no idea if there will be a lot of them, or if only in certain biomes, but i'd guess they would still require you to build mines on those points.

Edit: i'm pretty sure it was a post somewhere in the critiques/ideas in a thread about mines.

Mines are not going to be buildable, you gotta find em first.
