Let's Play - Haven and Hearth

Postby Agarrett » Sun Nov 28, 2010 4:07 am

Quite a while ago, I started making video tutorials on how to play Haven and Hearth, but I dropped them after 1 or 2 videos because of the sheer amount of time it took to compress the video. I finally found a good recorder now though, that is really easy to work with, and with it, I created this Let's Play series.

Here are the videos so far:

Part 1.1
Part 1.2

Part 2.1
Part 2.2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Audio Fix

Part 6

Part 7

Tell me what you think!

Great, always thought it needed a Let's play and I thought you did a good job despite the difficulty of doing it for H&H :)
I think you should change your tags to "Haven and Hearth" "Haven&Hearth" having "haven", "and" ,"hearth" all be separate tags gives a lot of unrelated related videos.
And a warning; building on top of a ridge you'll be unable to build a half wall as the tiles in front of it (the light green rim) can't be built upon but is still passable by players (but I've heard it sometimes work by using shift and placing the palisade).

Also, what recorder are you using?

I'm using Camstudio. Also, I'm not extremely worried about defending my encampment at the moment, and finding a solution to that problem is probably not that hard.

With camstudio, how do you reduce the files size down so (example) a 4 minute videio doesn't become 150 MB?
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

I get about a megabyte per minute of video, which is fantastic. I use a different compressor than the default one, I use the DivX Codec.

I noticed that the video seems to lag further and further behind the narration as the video went along. Did that just happen to me?

For the record:

1) The reason shift-clicking wasn't working for your equipment screen in the creation room is because you had had the chest open; the game currently only saves the last "shift-click target", so when you opened the chest, it overrode the equipment screen and closing the chest didn't restore it. Closing and re-opening the equipment screen would have fixed it.
2) Even when dragging things to the equipment screen, just click the avatar picture instead of the individual slots to auto-place clothing.
3) Admittedly, I'm not a native speaker, but I'm pretty sure "hearth" is supposed to rhyme with "heart" rather than "earth", though I agree it would be better if it didn't. :)

1. I am also letsplay, I forgot to login to my other account to post.

2. Yes, the video narration does lag behind and I agree that it really is annoying. Do you have a way to fix that?

3. We are both wrong about Hearth, it is not pronounced either way, but actually would sound like Harth. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hearth
But I don't care how anyone pronounces it, in my videos, I'm making it rhyme with Hearth.

Added 3 more videos. One of them describes how I found a way to fix the audio, although I later realized its still a bit delayed still, but the audio DOES end with the video, so you won't be hanging with 30 seconds of my character standing around doing nothing.

I still need a solution for the blurry recording, but I'll see if I can fix that.

I doubt I'll be able to get anymore updates for a bit, perhaps one or two days, as I am busy. But, I may be completely wrong and get like 5 updates, we will just have to see.
