Animals Running Away

Has there been an unannounced change? Last night, the newb alt I was playing could catch rabbits very easily. Today, rabbits and even level I foxes are running from the character I'm playing. I think it may now be next to impossible to hunt without tea - I have to be full run to catch anything, and as I know from moth chasing, you can't do that for long.

Works fine for me. They run, then stop for a few seconds.

EDIT: oh shit, you mean when you hit them? :( then they run from meeeee

Aye, was just about to make a thread about this.

Foxes and Boars take off running now after a few hits.

Rabbits and Chickens flee when targeted with an attack or right-click.

Edit: they also de-aggro once far enough off offscreen.

Think of it as "more fun this way" ;)

Sending chickens scattering helter-skelter with right clicks is way more fun than it should be.

Yeah, I'm experimenting with a new AI. One of the unintended consequences is that it is now too easy to kill boars. It might be too easy to kill foxes as well. I'm not sure yet. I wanted to put it into the real server to see what all the consequences are. Please post your comments. :)

I have only been hunting rabbits and level I foxes thus far, and I really like the update (hope higher level foxes still try their luck).
My suggestion is to change the critter running speed a bit.

Either tune it abit down, so you catch up with them after a screen or so (this happens to me with foxes allready, the rabbits just run in front of me, though)

Or maybe make them abit faster, so you know you wont get to them without terminating combat and find them again.

I had some occations of rabbits jumping over ridges in pursuit, this is probably not intended behaviour and there has been at least one server down since I saw one do it so it may allready have been fixed.

Foxes are harder from an unarmed perspective, as strangling results in quick stamina loss. I can keep an even pace with foxes while running, but if I need to stop for any reason like to take a swig of tea, that fox is gone. I like this, adds a bit more realism and complexity to hunting now that prey can escape. I have to plan on a chase and ensure I don't drop below 25% before I can kill it.

Boars are easy now, they move slowly and flee too soon. Only difficulty I had was navigating around rocks and trees. They need to stick around and fight longer, or not flee at all.

Archers are going to enjoy having to search forests/fields for their arrows, I bet.

This is pretty cool. But it is sort of weird that rabbits don't run away until you rightclick them. I've been able to catch them by saving my rightclick until the last moment.
