Neat little game I found

While cleaning up my files I found a little game I used to play some years ago, and I thought I'd share this with you since it does share similarities with our beloved HnH.

It's called Egoboo, was developed by one person and is pretty much a 3D adaptation of nethack. Over time, development had gone inactive several times, but since it's opensource, it was always picked up by someone and carried on. Currently there's a rather big dev base behind it. Since 1999, Egoboo has evolved from a tiny 20MB "demo" into a huge 150MB+ game with multiple classes, dungeons, etc - much to my surprise, since last time I played it it had maybe 5 dungeons, now it has over 40...

So whenever there's a server crash or you just feel like you have to get some offtime from grinding wheat, give this one a try, you might like it.

Egoboo

There's also a sequel called Secret of Ultimate Fantasy Unleashed (SoulFU) made by the same programmer, but imo it's not as funny to play as Egoboo as it's all just dungeon crawl with no built-in saving option in the vanilla version (hardcore gaming ftw!). Also it has some weird license attached to it, and its fanbase is much smaller than that of Egoboo. Graphics are better though (CEL shaded), and there's a better trading interface, inventory, and it's overall a bit more user-friendly. The SoulFU forums seem to be near-death (to me, anyway, do prove me wrong), and could need some repopulation...

There's Linux (and Mac if I'm not mistaken) versions of both games too, iirc there's even an Egoboo version in the Ubuntu repos, however I recommend compiling it from source since that way you get the up-to-date version and not the 1999 one, plus performance is alot better. I was able to compile it some months ago, and I'm a complete Linux / programming noob, so I guess it's quite easy to do.
