Forest Waysides

Postby Ariander » Fri Jan 07, 2011 1:56 am

Hey all,

Just a quick fyi - took it upon myself to start building these little waypoints or waysides in various spots of the wilderness. They're designed to be a quick safe spot to sleep, get something to eat/drink, etc. Most of the stuff I put in the waysides isn't useful to anyone but a lower level player (including myself - lol!).

Included are usually low level tools (axe, saw, etc.)
Sometimes I throw in low level armor or clothing (leather armor, bunny slippers)
Always stocked with water, firewood and simple food

Also planning to add roads to villages or major stopping points from these eventually too if anyone wants to help. :) I'm sure some moron will come along and rip them up, but I figure it's worth giving it a try. I know that when I first started, coming across something like that would have been really helpful.

So, if you run across one of these (usually mark them as such with a runestone), pls try to stock it with any extra stuff you have that you think might be useful/helpful to a younger player or someone who's out lost in the wilderness somewhere far from home. And if you make use of one, pls try to restock what you take before you leave the area. ;) (And if you're a just out to be an immature tool, just leave them be pls - nothing in them of value to a high level player anyway for pete's sake)

Don't want to break your merry mood, but this idea just won't work...

You would have to constantly check up on these break areas to make sure that the decay hasn't destroyed them. If you and others were to take care of them then you would eventually have to plant more trees in order to keep up with the repairs. Also whats stopping someone from just moving in and claiming the place?

Well, I hadn't thought about the decay issue over the long term (though I would hope someone using it would feel inclined to spend a little time doing some repair work) - but as for the claiming thing. I had thought about that - I'm trying to build them in areas that wouldn't be great for a village per se, but still situated conveniently enough to be useful for traveling.. . *shrug* As for claiming - I wouldn't see that as a problem to be honest ultimately either - my idea isn't to say "hey, I built this wayside so you can't build a claim here" - just to provide some quick respite for new and/or wilderness wanderings. If someone ends up building a claim, hopefully they'd maybe build a new wayside or something nearby. :)

(Or am I just overly optimistic and misguided in believing that ppl can be good sports and see the benefits of playing somewhat cooperatively rather than always stealing from/vandalizing/ murdering everyone they see that they don't know on site? LOL! For the record, I think that ppl who play like that are rather sad and pathetic - what possible challenge can it be to nuke a player or even an area for that matter, that is far beneath their own skill levels - to me that's not challenging or playing the game - that's just exhibiting sad, pathetic sociopathic tendencies and makes me wonder if such people beat up their own grandparents in real life whilst torturing puppies - ya know? Sad and pathetic! They seriously should seek help from a therapist and some good meds imo...)

If you enjoy building and maintaining the waysides and derive a sense of accomplishment from that activity, then why not continue? Who cares what other people think.
