Cave mining: How much progress have you made?

Postby LinkR » Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:56 pm

Well as someone who never really owns any actual mines (too competitive) I love the fact we can mine caves now! Though I am still recovering from a recent mining injury... Need metal to make a support beam but you need a support beam to safely get metal. Talk about a chicken or the egg scenario!

Anyway, so far I have yet to yield anything besides dozens and dozens of rocks :I

So, how much progress have you guys made so far? Or is it really that dang hard to get anything worthwhile besides daily concussions and bloody nubs for hands.

My personal progress involved a lowly 10 str area which was soft enough to yield about 3-4 mining hits before going empty on stamina. I originally started on an area where I could only get a single hit before running out, but I found a better spot. You guys think the harder rocks has a chance to yield better rewards?

it really doesn't matter

you should go every 20 tiles in a cave and try mining the walls for ore

From what I have read, harder rocks don't appear to have anymore chance of being anything special. You need to find an area that has metal, preferably by using the prospecting skill to find where to mine.

Alternatively, it seems if you move along the edge of caves, not mining more than one square in, you can avoid cave-ins (I believe this is correct, please do say if not) and search for metal spots like that.

heh well that's been my plan B. It's worked wonders up until yesterday when suddenly I forgot my last name due to the 500 pound rock that whacked me. Maybe it's just god (politely) telling me to try another spot.

A cave is a good place to mine if there are ore nodes around.
LinkR wrote:You guys think the harder rocks has a chance to yield better rewards?

Nope. it's all about where the ore node is located.

So far, I've learned that some walls have ores. Some have stones. (Depending on if the cave has any minerals at all.) I have found a low Q Tin stash inside a cave without prospecting. Now my theory is, the harder the rock, the higher Q the ore. That is again, if that wall has minerals.

So I was mining in this cave and not getting ore, and my friends were like "dude, we have better things too do!" so I switched walls and got iron ore. needless to say, they aren't bitching anymore...

I have currently found two caves near to each other. One has copper, and all our smelting/mining equipment/constructions, the other, a new one, has iron. I plan to dig out a long-ass tunnel inbetween them to save above-ground travel - right after I've palisaded it all in above-ground.

Should look quite epic when completed. Mine supports either side, inbetween will be light sources, and a central paved road.
