I like the idea of a hands-off game, but is the player base generally assholes? Will I play on and off for a week just to have three people come and beat the living hell out of me, forcing me to start over? I know there are risks involved with everything in this game, I'm just curious if little-un's are pretty much fish food.
Thanks!
Hi there. I had pretty much the same concerns when I started playing back during World 3.
I won't lie to you; this game will make you paranoid of everyone you meet. Being paranoid will keep you alive. But there are many ways you can stay hidden and keep your house safe, most of which are detailed on this forum in various stickies and guides.
The very basics are:
-Don't settle within minimap distance of a river (use a dowsing rod to find a watersource inland).
-Build your palisade asap. Plan it out carefully though, as it takes a bit of strength and a decent tool to destroy it.
-Don't bother hunting foxes, boars, aurochs (etc) on foot unless you've got a GOOD understanding of the combat system and a GOOD set of armour. Use boat-sniping with a bow instead, or you will find yourself dead very quickly.
-Try not to make it too obvious when you aquire something valuable. Keep as much equipment and tools inside your sheds/houses as you can fit. You want to look like a worthless target and not worth someone wasting their time breaking through you walls.
-Don't carry your gate keys around when you leave. Put the key on an alt, and never use that alt except to open and close the gate for you.
There's a whole lot more to learn about personal safety, but you'll pick that up as you go along.
My personal recommendation is to just hop in and see how it goes. When it comes down to it, this game is great fun and very addicting. And the world is HUGE. You may go days, even weeks without meeting anyone. And the danger just adds to the fun, IMO. It'll suck when you fall foul of a theif or a raider, but as long as you survive, you can rebuild or move on. :]
