Hacker? Or new form of stealth?

Postby LinkR » Sun Jan 23, 2011 11:04 am

Ok well an interesting thing happened to me just now. Some stranger started talking to me in the area chat, but he was nowhere to be seen. He mumbled something about me needing more perc*exp. He then fell silent. I have NEVER heard of needing to reach a perc*exp quota to see certain individuals. Has this happened to anyone else?

PS. to those replying with a "screenshot or it didn't happen".. a screenshot would just look like someone talking to me off screen. So a lot of good that would do.

He couldn't possibly be, you know, off screen? Just because you don't see him doesn't mean he isn't close enough to fucking local chat with you. At this point I'd consider that he was behind an object and you didn't realize.

he was talking to himself, far enough away that you couldn't see him on screen but close enough for area chat

area chat has a very long reach actually, so he may just have been off screen, or behind something (use xray in gilbertus if you want) but if he's close enough you should see his speech balloons

yeah there were no speech bubbles so he wasn't hiding. As for just being really far.. I don't know. I looked far and wide but saw nothing. Heck he went so far as to remark on what I was wearing. Somehow he could see me (presumably). Owell, you guys confirmed my assumption there wasn't some new feature so there's that. I'll just need to stay away from the alcohol for a wile.

He saw you first and decided to fuck with you.

What resolution do you run? If he's on a wide-screen, he can see a lot further than you and could've easily been off-screen as far as you're concerned, yet he'd still be able to see you.

As interesting a mechanic as it would be, full on cloaking-style stealth would be ridiculous here. It's bad enough to be attacked by raiders without them popping up out of nowhere and lopping your head off.
