Historical Comics

Someone linked me to Otoyomegatari today, a Silk Road comic that reminds me of H&H. The hunting part makes me wish we had horses and more of a minigame for pve, though

Vinland Saga is another neat one, its about Vikings. I've linked it here before

Historie is about a Greek scholar named Eumenes that becomes a general to Alexander the Great, the art is not as good as the others but still interesting story

Gunka no Baltzar has the protagonist as a military advisor sent to a small neighboring country to influence their development and strengthen their bonds against a foreign power. Takes place in late 1800s?

Shuto Hero is a Chinese story about Mongols and Tanguts.

Shoukoku no Altair takes place in Turkey. A young general attempts to avoid war with a nearby Empire.

In Jin, a Japanese doctor goes back in time and practices modern medicine.

1001 is an arabian nights story with a neat art style. it was made by the korean artist Yang-Young Soon, about 50 pages of it was translated into english by Studio Rain a long time ago, whose website went down

Mercenary Pierre is about a french mercenary who fights alongside Joan of Arc.

Warning: Wolfsmund is bullshit! Avoid!!

I just looked at the first couple pages, but the detail in the drawings is amazing.

Looks interesting, too bad those manga aren't completed yet.

Dunno whether I should mention this one,Wolfsmund, because I've seen nothing of it so far.

Mankind can never completely erase the sadness, because they are all fundamentally alone. but if you interact with others , you can forget the sadness for a while. and that moment is what makes life worth living.

Wow, i'm gonna read it some day. I'm not a big manga fan but i want to see the Japanese view on the Asian/European history.

Thanks a lot, having a good time reading this. If only manga faces weren't THAT simple... Is such a contrast in Otoyomegatari!

I haven't finished reading Otoyomegatari yet but my general impression has already formed... May i ask some questions to the people who know more about Japanese/anime culture and who probably can explain something? First, dont you think that this manga teaches people to be shy? Quite the opposite if compare it with western culture. I like modest people actually, but sometimes it may be a pretty bad idea...

Then, have this manga changed your view on Middle Asians peoples and cultures? I'm an East Slav, almost Russian, and Russians have pretty much contacts with these nations, and we tend to despise these nations somewhat. It's a pity, but we are not too much into such a thing as tolerance. Moreover we can't forgive nomads the eliminating of the Rus state at the begining of the 13th century. I know a lot of positive features of these peoples and a lot of negative features as well. In western culture we mostly prefer realism. Well at least in Russian culture we prefer realism. Here all the character and cultural aspects are showed in more or less positive way. I feel.. slightly uncomfortable. Probably that's my personal issue, though. Am i just a spoiled western guy with traditional Western misanthropic way of thinking? Or people really can't be that good?

inb4 nobody answers lol. Maybe i just should make a separate thread?

Otoyomegatari 13 Page 8
But do you know something about Central Asia? Some stereotypes? Not only central Asia but even stereotypes of the similar stuff in Indo-European culture. Or the scene when the bribe enters another family... at the very beginning of the novel. People just can't be THAT nice. I don't mind the author doing the story like that, but i just think this is somewhat impossible... from my personal experiences, the family like that would be full of quarrels...

Actually we still have some Turkic peoples in Ukraine, former nomads, and i like them because they suffer a lot. But some peoples from the East are considered to be pretty mean (that's a stereotype actually). It was nice to see another point of view of course. But the family stuff... i just don't believe it.

ps. Maybe people really have exceptionally shy to avoid quarrels after marriage? Especially in old-fashioned families. My university's "group-mate" has just married and she said she was pretty fine about living in a new family. But she's a very easy-going and shy person. I cannot give a direct example, but i actually believe it wouldn't work out with some of my kins at all.
