first few days...

Postby JuDgEFuDgE » Fri Feb 11, 2011 4:12 pm

in my first 2 days i have died three times
as signified by a (3) next to my chars name

my first death was due to a attempt to swim
(apparently he swims akin to a rock)

my second was because of a hasty settler who decided to demo me without asking why i was there (wished to trade goods, possible set up a path for carts..)

third was my first attempt at herding
unknowingly i lasso'd a (sheep-thing) and proceded to be destroyed by the herd =/

so i ask this
how'd your first few mistakes go?
handle it well? or ragequit like i did? =P

PS: H&H, you are a very harsh creation to noobs with no idea =P

Well, when I first started, the only real risk of death was from somebody deciding your face looked better plastered across the floor. Given the low player population and me sticking to a group that never really became an issue.

Fast forward a few worlds and off again on again playtime and my first honest-to-god death was a stupid mistake at the start of World 4. Seeking beef, a friend and I were killing aurochs from our boats. Despite knowing animals were murder-ie, I hopped out on the beach with the angry bastards to grab a fallen corpse to stow in the boat and got stomped on for my troubles. I tried to put the thing into my boat (which was full because I am a moron and I hadn't actually intended to help with these cows), then tried to put it down on shore (instead of into my friend's boat as he was offering). I even yelled at him to get out of the way.

It didn't end well.

I took it in stride though; the only problem I had with dying was that I was so stupid about it, and that the story is a farce rather than an epic (or at least a respectable 'I got stabbed in glorious battle').

I was retarded with my first character. I got over my incompetence and have been doing swell so far. Deaths are speed-bumps, not road-blocks.

A bear hiding behind a tree. That was before the discovery of custom downloadable clients :)

Lol, a few days ago, I tried to hunt a lone Auroch. I thought I was safe standing in the shallows. I was only barely. I was so fucking scared. RIGHT IN MY FACE. Barely managed to escape.

I caution against the wiki at times. It'll be helpful to learn the ropes and whatnot but not at all helpful once you start being more advanced, trying to optimize, etc.

Death 1: I was still a complete noob, with nothing of worth, I was exploring and was chased by a boar, and ran straight into another boar. Needless to say, I was a goner.

Death 1.5: not quite a death, but it was close. I decided to raid an anthill, and the ants swarmed me.
Having 1 in all stats and knowing nothing about the combat system, I fled for my life. The blasted ants kept on me, and didn't stop until I was knocked out. After that, I started walking back to my camp, and for some reason my shoes had not been equipped. I got Thorn in the foot for a good 5-10 minutes or so, continually falling right back down after recovering (I was low on HP to begin with), When I finally got back, I had 27 HHP left out of the 100 I started with. I parked this character and made a new one, feeling the loss was too much to recover from, and not worth the trouble.

Death 2: I was exploring, again, in the forest, while carrying my boat. And I ran into a bear in the forest, and fled to the nearby moor. Thankfully it only knocked me out, but it decided it wanted to stick around my fallen character forever. Giving up playing dead waiting for it to go away, I logged out while KOed. The next morning, I logged in, and, seeing no bear, preceeded to explore the moor I was in. And Encountered a bear IN the moor (probably the same one) which proceeded to maul me to death without a second's hesitation.

Death 3: I was boating on the river near my finally established claim looking to gather clay, and encountered a boat with two riders. Being skittish, hearing about all these murderous players, I gave them a wide birth, but they talked to me, and seemed relatively friendly, so we chatted a bit. They mentioned they didn't kill experienced players, and thankfully, I had scavenged a fox hide which I had made a hat from, and had just recently aquired a full suit of nettle clothing, which led them to thinking I was experienced, though I was still quite a noob, still living off chickens, rabbits, and apples. While we were chatting, in boats, in the middle of the river, apparently they were ramming my boat or something, because it was decaying very quickly. Unfortunately I didn't notice the decay untill the last minute, and then it broke right out from under me, leaving me stranded in the river, without swimming. After floundering a bit trying to learn swimming quickly and make my way to shore, as my stamina faltered. Then I drowned, taking with my water grave my lovely fox hat, my second sling (the first I forgot to recover from the bear attack, and had been expensive as I was low on leather production, and I couldn't even use it effectively yet), and my nettle clothes. All of which had taken much effort to acquire at that point.

thankfully, I've gone without a death now for a good time, and really expanded my abilities. I have an alt living in an abandoned palisade, fully capable of taking down boars with a sling, and working to get strong enough to mine, and a small farm on my main, running out of storage options for everything I own.
