World Travellers

Postby Naeght » Tue Feb 22, 2011 5:55 am

Since i discovered the game (a month ago), my dream has been travelling all around the hearthling world, meeting people, hearing their stories, being invited to drunken parties in a town share stories and part my way, maybe trading a few stuff, but the main goal beeing getting to know the most interesting things in the game at least for me, wich are the players, and the history of the world they are forging. Altough i have found a home in a lovely village, this is still my dream.
I quickly realized, that, if i wanted to meet prosper towns, lovely hermits, and the occasional not so friendly thief, i would have to wait for the world to develop, and to train enough to defend myself.
The things im wondering about, and i would like for older players to share their thoughts and stories, is how long should i wait for the world to be developed enough that great cities develop and are willing to welcome a traveler (maybe by making a thread on the forums before), yet the world is still dangerous enough to be interesting. I want to hear(read in the chat) tales of war (righteous or economic), of Vigilante Ranges and Robin Hood thief (and i really hope there is someone like that out there), but not after the world is settled and divided by the great villages, but i want to see the world while that happens.
Also, has anyone done this before? If they did and there is a thread, direct it here please, and if they didn't, just write the story.

Bring tales of past worlds, of travelers welcomed by both enemy villages, tales that bring humanity to both conflicting sides.

You can always actively employ yourself to help develop the world; eventually a major city ought to form, but until think, the world in flux holds much in the way of story too.

Like in concept it sounds really charming and interesting, but then when you actually sit back and apply it to the actual gameplay it's just like "Uhhh......."

I take exception to that. I've roleplayed and continue to do so; its not necessarily any 'weirder' than any other playing style, so as long as you have imagination to accomodate the gameplay aspects of the game.

Correct. They are not any less weird that regular MMO players. They're much more weird.

Right.

Now, besides discussing the relative merits of chosen gameplay value...I don't think such a world will exist until there's a lot less to exploit and a lot more reason to trade. More functioning overland travel will help as well; that said, I've been working on a local trade network, and it seems to be actually successful so far.

It would be awesome if you could take a wagon and travel around, carrying everything you need with you. Chests with food, chest with valuable trading goods, parts of a raft for crossing the rivers, tanning tubs in your wagon... Hunting as you travel to replenish your food supplies, and when you go offline you set up a temporary encampment.
But with current metagame you would only be a target, and a big one at that. :) Maybe if you get more experienced people that are willing to protect you but it seems like too much work for something that probably wouldn't work, since every village has similar prices (damn you world wide web in the ancient germanic times)
