Tricky prospecting

Postby rend » Tue Feb 22, 2011 1:16 pm

Resently prospected my cave (it's a small one), used all four charges of extract and had no hits, but what do you know? There is ore just two tiles away from tile I was prospecting. Don't know is it posted somewhere else (at least I hav'nt seen it), so I thought this information may help someone.

Prospecting always prospects one layer below you. If you want to check if a cave has any ore, you have to be on ground level and above the cave, because prospecting in a cave actually prospects the 2nd level (the one under the cave).
Also, wrong part of the forum, it should be in 'How do I'.

No, he's in the right forum. He's posting information, saying that while his prospecting failed he was able to mine ore nearby. The issue is that this is widely common knowledge that you can just chip the walls of a cave to prospect for ore. Also, he doesn't appear to know what you stated but that is not immediately intuitive so it's forgivable.

My understanding of prospecting is that prospecting in a cave won't reveal minerals inside the cave, but in the layer below the cave. It is possible that I'm wrong since my knowledge is purely theoretical so far, but I was only trying to help with what I heard. ;) I apologize if that created confusion.

Did they change it so instead of a message there's a circle with no arrow?

If you're on top of the ore vein, you get a message with what's down there. If you're close to it but not on top of it, sometimes you get a red circle which points in the right direction. If you follow the circle and prospect every few steps you'll eventually find the vein and get the message. You'll also get a lot of messages saying there's nothing there while doing this, which is confusing and frustrating.

Near town tokens, specially if the towns are walled (that's why they wall them). If you can manage to convince the villagers to let you in, you'll probably find some around the altar.
