Unlike soil or water, q10 clay isn't repeatably diggable. Keep looking and generally speaking travel something like a screen before digging again. If you find a multi dig spot, then try every 5 squares or so to look for the node's center. But unless you're near a node (for the nubblies reading -> nodes are points of high quality clay/water/soil resources), you can't dig clay at all. And I'm assuming you're digging in shallow water, that's where you find clay
