Newbs first days

Hey Guys!

I Started playing HH on Tuesday, and because i got a lot of freetime right now i played quite alot. Now i wanted to check out the Forums and tell you my Impressions about the Game. I know that alot of ppl will say "who cares about your Opinion?" but i really would like to hear some Opinions concerning my Decisions and of course my attitude towards the Game after the Hours i played. Oh and in case someone wonders, English isnt my native Language, so i probably will make some Mistakes concerning Grammar.

I found H&H by simply Googling for "Sandbox Games". I was in search for a Game where you can actually build and Craft and need to Survive. I Played Minecraft, but after a while it just gets too blocky for me, and surviving isnt exactly hard when most of the Monsters have a Mortal Enemy called "The Dirt Block". So i searched for something else.

After creating my Character i played the game of Trial and Error for the first few ingame Hours, and actually managed to do quite a few Things (Some of them a bit Stupid after reading a Guide and the Wiki). The First thing that came to my mind was obviously in a Game about Surviving you need Food and Shelter, so i just started building a House right were i started (I actually started building the Big one instead of the Small one, took me quite some time). After discovering that every Item gives LP when you get it the first Time, i started right clicking everything in sight and collected all i could see. Like i said, i read the Guide and the Wiki alot later then playing, so i choose alot of Skills that were probably unnecesessary. Well atleast i got Lumberjacking and Fishing, which proved to be good Choices.

After logging out, reading a few Hints and a Guide and logging back in, i found the few Containers around my Camp empty. The First sign that it was a very stupid idea to set up Camp directly at a River and in Grassland, but i allready had half the Materials for my House (and im Lazy) so i sticked with the Place. While my Char was building the House i entered the Chat, maybe to find someone that would answer me some Questions or even someone that would like to play with me, playing alone proved to be a bit boring over long periods. Sadly the first thing i was told was that Noobs will get abused by everyone, and that it is practically impossible to find some Mates if you dont know them in Reallife. So i stayed alone and instantly fled whenever i saw an other Player.

After finishing my House, a Fence around it and starting to make Leather, i got really pissed at the ppl that kept emptying all my Containers of Stuff, especially the Wishbones and normal Bones. So i started just carrying everything valuable when logging out, which finally helped with that issue, atleast a bit. The Yeomanry Skill was 4k LP away, and i didnt knew curiosities give lots of LP, so i really started to get annoyed by not being able to defend anything i got. Luckily i met another player, he friendly started a Conversation when he met me in the Woods. Playing for 2 Weeks, he could tell me quite alot. After making me his kin we would talk alot, and i was glad that i finally seemed to found the 1 Player that didnt try to steal from me or even kill me. Sadly he was killed yesterday, and i never saw him again after that.

Now today i actually got a shitload of LP from a Wishbone and was just a few more away from Yeomanry. But then Destiny kicked my butt. After building a Slingshot (and without knowing how Combat actually works) i attacked a Fox, who then knocked me unconcious ( I didnt hit him once wiht my Slingshot, i ahd Stones with me and all, but when i started aiming the Bar wouldnt increase no matter how long i wait). When i stood back up again i instnaly ran away back to my Camp, where a Boar waited for me and killed me off for good. After reincarnating a very big part of my LP were gone and now im again 4k away from learning Yeomanry. Back to study then i guess.

In Hindsight, i choose a bad Place to set up Camp and did alot of Things wrong. So if any of you have some advise to give me as a Noob or some Hints what is most important when starting, i would be really grateful.

Also a little Question that bugged me, is that with the Abuse and greifing true? I Would really like to play with some others instead of alone, i saw some Villages (One in Walking Distance of my Camp) but the ppl there ignore me entirely if i talk to them. Any Hint on how to find some Mates?

The game has a bit of a learning curve, I notice. :)

While not everyone is a griefer, you should assume they are. Since there is little disincentive around killing a new player, people will do it. However, most players and villages recognize that a noob becomes valuable if helped along. Your best bet is to find someone willing to take you in, by forum, IRC, or in game. Its difficult if you do not know where you are, unless you are willing to start a new character at the village hearth. If you are Middle-South or if you are ok with starting a new character, just PM me and I will send you my hearthsecret so we can play together. Its definitely not true that you need to play with IRL friends.
Either way, you are learning fast. Keep at it and overcome the brutal learning curve.

Getting a custom client (http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=14575) can help a bunch! It has functions that you can toggle like night vision and x-ray, which will help keep you alive. Avoid bears and boars like the plague (unless you're in a boat with a sling), and never attack anything you're not 100% sure you're able to kill.

Well the Custom Client helped alot, and since i met Lawton and teamed up with him, things got alot better.

I think the game really offers a better experience if youre not experiencing it alone, especially because things go generally faster. One thing that bugs me tough is the Wildlife. For a Newb the only thing you can hunt is Rabbits and things smaller than that. Even a Fox is a big threat to any newbie, in my Opinion even a New guy should be able to hunt atleast one Animal after spending a few Points in Marksman. Especially since Leather is pretty important (backpacks for example).

Or it would also help if there were more Rabbits around, sometimes i can stroll trough the wilderness for an hour and i wont see even one, the World generally is a bit empty when it comes to Wildlife. Just my opinion.
