A Newbie Looks At Things So Far

Postby Argus » Thu Mar 24, 2011 11:54 pm

Well, while the good folks who run H&H try to fix whatever has caused the server to conk out like a computer trapped in a sandstorm, I figure I'll take a few minutes to go over what seems to work for me, being the perennial, eternal newb that I am.

1) You're gonna lose stuff initially. Seriously, folks, until you get Yeomanry, you should keep EVERYTHING important on yourself. I had folks wandering through and snatching rabbit hides off the drying rack. It's gonna happen. All I can tell you is buckle down and make that push for the big Y skill.

2) Exploration. Ever see that video with Steve Ballmer, going 'Developers, developers, developers, developers'? Substitute 'exploration' for developers. I'm not kidding. My game started to seriously get better after I'd plowed some LP into exploration -- just to rank /6/. Thistle, blueberries, chantrelles... bump that exploration up, folks. You need it.

3) Yeomanry's cost may scare you. Don't let it. Yes, 4000LP may seem stiff, but that's why you jack up your Exploration score -- because you then have a chance of foraging things like itsy-bitsy spiders/webs. Hit anthills for ant soldiers, queens, and empresses. Chickens and rabbits can yield up rabbit paws and wishbones. And of course, you can churn out primitive dolls and cone cows. Once you have yeomanry and a plot set out, things will get MUCH better.

4) It's only a game :)

Speaking of protecting your belongings before Yeomanry.. never forget that if you sleep in a lean-to, you can store a crate full of items next to you and be protected from theft. While you're online people can still steal from you, but you can double your saved items while offline. That's definitely enough to get started.

Don't forget the dandelions! They are very common on grasslands/hearthlands/moors, and rarer in forests.
Also, Get boat building so you can make bark boats for good LP, and for boats to explore faster.

I completely forgot about that, Tamalak. Good call.

Also:

5) Use the goddamned wiki. I invariably have the wiki open when I play, because I'll want to find out something -- skill prereqs, building materials, or just what lure I need to get those fish.

6) LP is LP. That means if I find a dandelion, unless my attention is maxed out, guess where it's going? Yep. I want all the LP I can claw up. D00mHouse ftw.

7) RUN AWAY FROM THE BEARS. That's why my main is now named 'Argus II'. Yeah. Argus the First done got etten by a bear. You see one, turn and go the other way.

What is your favorite terrain for settling? I prefer broadleaf next to heathland.

My favorite's number 4. Don't flip if you die and when you demand LP items from your friend they won't give it to you and RAEG quit. :D

I like just any forest with a swamp and grassland close by :P

Swamps = Curios <3

I've been looking for one of those cliffs that go into the rivers, specifically one with a cave entrance over the river, but since I have yet to find one.. I like prairies and cliffs cosmetically. Prairie cliffs.

Where ever no one else is, preferably nowhere near good resources. I keep trying but they keep finding me! xD
