Strange death, how is it possible ?

Postby Tildrassyl » Tue Apr 26, 2011 3:46 pm

Hi,

One of my friend died today and we couldn't understand why.

He was in our claim (closed with palissades), not hungry, not injured (no leeches or other things like that on him).
He disconnect this morning and when he return few hours later, game over ... no more character on his screen, only his skeleton on his destroyed hearthfire with nothing near him (byebye keys, stuff...)

I've only see two trepassing's scents out of palissades, no visible damage on it, no other scents and nothing else missing in the camp.
If you got an idea of what happend ...

(sorry for my english, english lessons are so far away now)

Trespassing isn't summonable, but theft and vandalism is.
You don't have to be right next to the hearth fire to summon someone, so don't leave your hearth fires out in the open if you don't have a clean record.

Are there scents? If there's an Assault scent then he could have been shot from outside of the palisade. You did say he disconnected not logged out.

Also was his Hearthfire outside?

No assault scents near the camp, only trepassing one near the palissade, far from his hearthfire.
His HF was in our palissades behind his house (30 tiles from them).
He used Quit command from Ender, i don't know if it logs out or just disconnect

If by foraging you mean take shit while inside the claim, then that was considered stealing and he left a theft scent. Apparently not all of those claims were abandoned and his misjudgement got him killed.

If they can see it, they can click on it, they can kill him. And hearth fires show up on the screen very very far away, even when the trees haven't loaded yet. So anyone with a custom client could see you easily. In fact, 30 tiles can be seen with default client and scroll wheel camera.

Yes Quit means you quit. I thought his internet stopped working so he just decided to take a break for the day but didn't properly log out.

I think the visual distance is 40 tiles (maybe wrong) but I'm pretty sure its 30 or more. So if your friend did steal anything or kill someone then he could have been force summoned. But the lack of scents is weird, then again they could just have a better stealth check than your spot check (yes rpg terms).

It's 40. The range is sometimes a bit less because things aren't loading quickly enough or you've only moved over a couple tiles and not triggered a new request for data from the server to load those last few tiles.
