The compelling feeling to use an alt.

Postby Aspie » Thu May 12, 2011 6:17 am

I hate it. I've only been playing for about a week now, and I'm doing alright. I'm to the point now that a death would feel like a huge setback. So, now I have a compelling feeling to use an alt for everything.

I don't feel great about this. Alts to me are for experimenting with play, so that you understand it better. Using an alt to fish because I'm afraid of some death squad showing up and killing me is just ridiculous. Or because of those random lag spikes! Uhg, my friend just died to that today and now he's not going to play anymore.

Is death really that bad? Obviously, I'm at full change, and I'm considering going off of full change once I get enough unarmed and ranged to decently defend myself, but is it ever really worth it? Or is death always a big setback feeling? I haven't died yet, so I don't know, but I can imagine. I'd probably stop playing, because death can happen at any moment. Right now, somebody would wander into my log cabin and say, "Time to die!" I might have the unarmed to actually do something, but then I might not, and if I do, I might lag enough that I lose and get killed anyway. This is a very bad feeling for me.

Any thoughts?

You just experienced one of those moments, it happens, go ahead and use alts.

Alts shouldn't be tossed away like nothing though not in my opinion, you should make alts for certain things, like fighting, farming, etc. Your main may have his hand in many different areas, but if you get attacked and die at least you have a backup farmer. Once you can start making curios that last more than a day you can easily make a few alts and keep them fed to get their stats to 100+ within a few weeks.

One q40 shewbread takes 4 days and gives around 70k LP, with that and time running around getting basic discoveries I was able to get 50 in a stat on a character in the first line, getting Farming to 100 (should have you good for a while) will take something like 4~5 q40 shewbreads, if you put other things on them as well it alleviates this problem. You will however need wine (any Q) to bump their INT up some to be able to put the shewbread on, since it's 16 ATT.

Shame your friend quit, people die all the time, it's part of the game, I mean you don't just quit DF because you lost do you?

You'll lose the character come next reset anyway. Dust in the wind, man, dust in the wind.

Though you make a good point, death on Haven is much more significant than losing on Dwarf Fortress.

I long for the day when outside-system methods such as bots, alts, nightvision, x-ray and mapping clients are a thing of the past.

I have Enders but I specifically turn SHOW ANIMALS to OFF because that's just gay and not chivalrous and takes the fear away. Nighvision is something I'm not proud of using. The reason I do is because I got Enders specifically to zoom, and the night light does not zoom as well. Plus I've noticed that when night is turned off my game plays significantly smoother/faster. If the darkness took up the whole screen when zoomed I'd stop nightvision. X ray crashes my game, and I have no Idea what mapping clients are. I do almost everything the hard way in preservation of the classic fun.

however I too have fallen victim to the OPs conundrum. I have almost become a total Agoraphobic in this game. If a man with a sword on the river says "you know what, I feel like killing this fellow" all i can do is run, which from what I read, they are probably better then me at doing. So I started to use an alt for vulnerable stuff like palisade work, but I purposefully do not give any stats whatsoever to my alt's exploration because I find it morally apprehensive to just go around with an alt and collect things to just make my main who never does anything stronger and stronger. Kinda sounds like a king ordering around his subjects to make him wealthy while he sits on his ass away from danger. But I guess what the Op is expressing along with me is that players are so fearful of the community, they either stop playing, or play like dicks to get by. But we don't really like either option at all.

You know there are fortresses that have been around longer than some worlds in the HnH. A tantrum spiral is like dying, if something happens that makes you lose all dwarfs it would be worse than death in HnH.
