Charity in the Middle of the Harsh Wilderness?

Postby SaintGilbert » Mon Jul 04, 2011 5:59 am

I am starting a Mission (think: homeless shelter with public services such as drying racks, beds, tables and chairs, farmland) in the middle of nowhere for newbies and people having a tough time of it.

Any suggestions for services I should provide? I intend for it to be unclaimed...

If it's unclaimed then don't expect much.

In previous worlds I made a guesthouse (log cabin) on the outskirts of my claim, most often a distance away along the river, stocked with every kind of meat/crop and some various mid quality tools and equips (back when mass producing things gave LP I'd end up with plenty leftovers).

I left a runestone saying to rest your weary bones and take anything you need but please not be greedy. It works until some greedy fucker takes everything and even steals the sturdy bed.

Yeah, some people will take everything not nailed down and then bring a pry bar to get those things that are nailed down.

On the subject, I've always done pretty good with leaving crops out. People are fairly good at replanting them when they take. I never leave more than a wooden plow, though.

i support your efforts, i built a village for new players, but i liked it when we lived in a fenced settlement without claims better then this palisade's unwanted attention. as long as your off the river and have active people walking around, random visitors useally talk rather then loot. only trouble is if no ones around, then they help themselfs to your stuff.
random visitors around a palisade tend to be more vilolent.
This game really needs a great sword...

You better have the support of your neighbors. Those places have a tendency to wind up as shitholes.

If you leave it unclaimed, someone will come in and claim it, make it a village at least.

Palisades do, don't they? Don't worry; I am so primitive I can't even make bone glue yet. So no worries about palisades.

Sadly, I built mine right next to a river, on the edge of a tiny peninsula. I wanted to do this for the benefit of the poor; water builds stamina, stamina makes for ploughing, woodcutting, and building, and they can also build boats and rafts to get the heck outta there, too, now that I think about it. I hope raiders will not think my tiny plot worth the trouble to destroy. I intend for it to be quite humble (as I am only capable of humble tasks at the moment).

Of course not. If I left them the best equipment, what incentive would they have to go out and try making life better for themselves? I want this place to be a thing for players who need to get back up on their feet, or who are just beginning and are scared and don't know what to do. It must be primitive and basic, or else no one will work to rise above dependency and I will have to babysit them forever. That is God's work, not mine. But I think I can help them at least to survive while they look for a rabbit they can catch and squash so they can make a bonesaw, or until they can afford yeomanry.

From what I've heard, it can be a pretty hostile world for newbies. I'm just a newbie reaching out to the poor, tired, injured, and starving in a cold, cruel world of fighters, powermongers, and raiders. And I do it in the name of Christ and Saint Boniface (Patron saint of Germany). That last part may not mean much to you. Doesn't have to. I just wanna help. K? ;)

@ Vampirate: A good point, but if I claim the area, I would restrict access to the Mission to myself. I want people to be able to come and go as they need, and if I may not be there, they will suffer for it. I want anyone who needs to be able to get help.

I think low-quality goods (like spruce bough beds, wicker baskets, etc.) might deter thieves and vandals because you can already find dozens of abandoned wicker baskets, leantos, and other primitive abandoned crap lying around the world. Even tables, chairs, and ploughs aren't too difficult to come by. Am I right?

perhaps a campground?

build a bonfire and surround with lean to's and tables... each lean to gets a crate and spruce bed...

set up village claim to cover area... maybe call the village "salvation army refugee camp"

pali off a cabin for local storage with cupboards and you can restock the crates in the lean to's as needed...
