So, when you prospect, it goes by (Q-10)*5. Let's say this gives us a distance of 20 tiles.
Now, would the range be 20 tiles north and 20 tiles south, or 10 tiles north and 10 tiles south? Or 10 tiles north/south and 9 tiles south/north (Counting the "Middle" as the player?).
Same for east-to-west.
Next the issue is, diagonally. Do tiles count as corners-touching, or only next to each other and "stagger" there way along? This gives an effective distance, if it's the previous, of 10 tiles north-east. Of the latter, 20 tiles north-east. Then the previous issue of north and south, which could demote ranges to as small as 5 tiles, diagonally, to a maximum of 20 tiles, diagonally.
This confusion makes it quite difficult to map out where you've prospected! Any knowledge available on this matter?
This is more of a hypothetical discussion/debate of a feature, than a "Plz help" for the How Do I section. I think.

A. 20 tiles in each direction.
B. 10 tiles in each direction.
C. "Staggered" per-tile 20 tiles in each direction.
D. by-corner 20 tiles in each direction.
(10 tiles in each direction would just be thinner C).
(Red Dot in the center is the player, 1 tile).

Right now, I'm going to go with A and C, just because it looks cleaner on my Prospecting image file, heh. However, if it *were* by-corners with diagonal, the Prospecting Rings would be circular, rather than square, as seen in my image below.
