Banks

I'm going to make something like a hearth vault, except it won't be used to protect criminals. I'm going to make a small but very well protected area, and store my stuff in it. There will be no gate: I'm going to put up a village claim and warp in and out of the area with crossroads. Do you think I would be able to start a little business this way? Eventually, I might make people pay for me to store their valuables in my little fortress and I might sell mini hearth vaults for people who want their hearthfires protected but are too lazy to make their own hv. Think it's a good idea?

it would have to be a pretty damned secure vault as every raider in the game would be gunning for it.

haha you're right. I'd need layers and layers of brick walls and tons of safeboxes. And even then, a super mighty russian might be able to break in :P

This would be cool, to bad alts ruin it and make it pointless.

Neat idea but theres alot of problems with it.

1) Everyone would try to break in =p
2) No offense to you at all but if people don't know you, they aren't about to trust you

It is a cool idea though =)

It's a good idea on paper but too many things ruin it. Sorry =(

Not just that. I'd also put it several layers underground and have customers warp in by crossroads from somewhere else, never knowing their true physical location.

You'd have to be capable of offering more protection than what other hearthlings would be able to get on their own.
It's also not safe -- anyone can easily track your vault so you can't even hide it. Once it's compromised it's done for, for good too. Any item that has been scented and deposited into your vault is a free method for them to track.

I'd advise a "cleaning" period where you leave newly deposited items on offline-alts for 5 days to prevent them being tracked, then move them into storage. Never let any clients know where the vault is or give them access to it. Arrange meetings with them at positions of their choosing and always meet up with them with alts. If a deal goes sour and they lose their goods, all you lose is an alt. If anyone defaults on payments, their goods become yours.

It would have to be all about trust. They're handing you their valuables to protect from raids, thieves, and internal conflict. If you have no reputation or a bad reputation, no one will ever deal with you. There's a good chance that the bulk of your customers will be raiders and thieves stashing hot loot for awhile too, so you better be willing to turn a blind eye and make strange bed fellows.

Be smart about how you play and you could pull it off -- to what profit is dubious of course but it's not impossible! If it's your dream, then heck, go for it~!
