PvP question regarding melee vs ranged

Postby Gringott » Sat Jul 30, 2011 5:35 am

It seems with the lag going melee at this time would be pretty dumb right (unless your going to pali bashing)

I'm guessing this lag works better for ranged players more often then not.

Anyone have a story of how they lagged in a close melee fight and died? or couldnt maintain melee range?

It all depends on where you located to the nuked zones I guess, if you jump around on alts you will notice lag is 0 in some places, but others every 3 seconds or so is a 3-5 sec pause - ouch.

also, how do you determine your coords with enders?

Thank you

Well it depends on the area, if you are close and touchable by the enemy then ranged isnt the way to go.
On the other hand when you have a cliff/palisade in the way it sure is neat to be ranged.
Also the lag isnt too big to affect anything.

That pretty much described world 4 and I was one of the few people that never died in that world PvE or PvP wise.

When taking into account of melee traditional combat wise, make sure to not use Death or Glory or Charge when you noticed that it hasn't lagged yet because it may be due after a while. It is hard to recover from getting hit as the one that strikes first generally wins as the one that is struck not one has to deal with a destroyed defense but an advantage loss as well snowballing the effect. PvE-wise make sure to keep a boat nearby or stay at the shallow if you are not sure so you can beat a hasty retreat if things goes bad. PvP wise, if you can hunt animals well, you can generally apply this to PvP except the fact that if someone stsings you while you have no defense, you're dead. What makes PvP vastly different is that hearthlings are smart enough to wolf-pack you.

There is no rule that rangers cannot fight up close as they will use unarmed style as well but it is a bit harder to shoot up close. Any close range attack will reset their aim meter. For PvE, it is not so much of a problem if you can keep your defense up using slide and then start shooting at them. You may want to hit 6 coins to get flex so you can power up your attack to plunk into defense. One thing you need to keep in mind that any range attack will deplete your attack even if it has no factor in range combat. For PvP, whether the one survives getting hit by a ranger bow depends on a few things from most important to least: Aim Meter, Total Armor vs Ranger Bow quality, Agility vs Perception, target's HP.

Note: Wooden Bow and Slings will have problems even against leather set and deal no damage to bronze set.

An enemy will only fight if he believes he either has a chance to win, or you've backed him into a corner and he's fighting for his life. A completely crushing victory provides an enemy with neither.

Good players have too good armors for any ranged weapon to do any dmg to them, so if you wanna kill noobs go ranged, if you wanna be competitive, go UA & melee.

Not quite so. Without ranger bow, you can get away with lower grade armor as you only need a good sword blow to kill someone despite armor but with rangers on the field you need to field your better armor or risk losing that character regardless of skill level. Ranger bows are also cheaper to field than an entire steel set with golden helm. The world 3 double-threat situation still applies with UA/Ranger style.

I heard that Ranged shots bypass armour if the opponent is running around.

I can punch a Boar, directly to his HP, if he runs away from me. I'm guessing it's likewise for players, so moving around negates your Armour score.

Moving renders your defense weight to zero which means you are automatically struck with the full damage formula of the attacker. If your total armor is still above their total damage, they will still deal 0 damage to you if it is with a sword 5% total damage with an axe, or 30% total damage with an unarmed strike.

Moving is actually the best defense against ranger bow. Slings and, to a lesser extent, wooden bow aim a little too fast to effectively shake off their aim by moving.
