That pretty much described world 4 and I was one of the few people that never died in that world PvE or PvP wise.
When taking into account of melee traditional combat wise, make sure to not use Death or Glory or Charge when you noticed that it hasn't lagged yet because it may be due after a while. It is hard to recover from getting hit as the one that strikes first generally wins as the one that is struck not one has to deal with a destroyed defense but an advantage loss as well snowballing the effect. PvE-wise make sure to keep a boat nearby or stay at the shallow if you are not sure so you can beat a hasty retreat if things goes bad. PvP wise, if you can hunt animals well, you can generally apply this to PvP except the fact that if someone stsings you while you have no defense, you're dead. What makes PvP vastly different is that hearthlings are smart enough to wolf-pack you.
There is no rule that rangers cannot fight up close as they will use unarmed style as well but it is a bit harder to shoot up close. Any close range attack will reset their aim meter. For PvE, it is not so much of a problem if you can keep your defense up using slide and then start shooting at them. You may want to hit 6 coins to get flex so you can power up your attack to plunk into defense. One thing you need to keep in mind that any range attack will deplete your attack even if it has no factor in range combat. For PvP, whether the one survives getting hit by a ranger bow depends on a few things from most important to least: Aim Meter, Total Armor vs Ranger Bow quality, Agility vs Perception, target's HP.
Note: Wooden Bow and Slings will have problems even against leather set and deal no damage to bronze set.

An enemy will only fight if he believes he either has a chance to win, or you've backed him into a corner and he's fighting for his life. A completely crushing victory provides an enemy with neither.
