Your first encounter with a hostile player

Postby sillynipples » Sun Aug 07, 2011 6:21 am

I was out hunting mouflon when a guy with a dragon helm and a sword passed by. I thought nothing of it at first and kept hunting, but when I got off my boat to pick up some dead mouflons he came back and attacked me. He knocked me out, but didn't kill me. He looked trough my pockets but took nothing. Then I talked to him. He assumed that I was from a rich village nearby and that I might have a key for him to take. When he saw that I had nothing to steal, he apologized and helped me kill the rest of the mouflons. I asked him to kin me. I wasn't insulted or even mad that he tried to kill me, I was glad that he left me alive and honored because I feel like I just hit an H&H milestone. It was strange and kind of cool.

I might add that this happened several weeks after I started playing. Before this happened, I think I literally said hello to everyone I came across and I met nothing but peaceful people who offered me help. I think I was very lucky.

How was your first encounter?

That is an extremely fortunate turn of event. Most people are very trigger happy and will kill first ask question never.

My first hostile encounter with a player involved me being a victim of KlauE's attack which, needless to say, I did not survive, as I was dramatically outstated and lacking knowledge. Fortunate, dying a lot permanently in rogue-like games gave me a decent deal of resilience to dying in this game. I just made a temp account and wait till KlauE finished cleaning out my newbie home before salvage what is left and relocating.

After establishing my home elsewhere, I start developing my ability to fight back. I lose some leather armor as well as hunger to fighting animals though. After several tries I finally learned how to fight ants. Unlike some people, I am not gifted with intuition or sharp instinct so I learned through tenacity rather than cleverness. However, I did not try to hunt for KlauE as that was pretty much asking for trouble. Simply, I kept to myself until the end of my playing time before I left. When I returned a good long deal mater, much of the system has changed and I had to relearn everything again. Fortunate there was a combat guide that was published that helped me learn it in easier steps than my previous.

Nowadays, when someone attacks me, I fight back. If I survive. I simply pick up my boats and my belongings, end combat, and warp out.

W3

i consider this my first hostile encounter since the others were basically i was just "passing by" so to speak(soo sorry would be killers! I'm in a Boat)

during my first wagon trek in W3 I was chased by 2 guys with swords and such. my gut told me somthing wasn't right and long story short, they began chasing me. I got REAL lucky though as just b4 they were gonna catch up with me(try hightailing it in a wagon in a forest) I found a swamp and got away.

My first hostile encounter was in w3. A thief had the balls to attack one of our newer villagers hoping to get the key to the guy's palisade (He lived outside of the main area.) Dude screamed bloody mary in village chat and I rushed over there to help him. At this point in time my ability to actually fight was just about non-existent. Even with a decent melee skill I didn't know a thing about combat to be honest. Luckily I was in q90 Bronze Armor and Sword at the time thanks to some trades for decent enough clay to raise our quality up. I even had a shield equipped with Block up.

He managed to break my defense and took a chunk of my hp out but I was just building initiative, Op Knocked him 4 times and Stung. Death or Glory and did it again. Finished him off and built a house over the scents.

No words exchanged just blows. Which is fine; fair combat is a rarity in any game and being blessed enough to see it is an amazing experience. I can't tell you how fast my heart was pumping at the time.

How did you end up figuring on how to OP knock 4x?

Because it was straight forward and it was how I killed bears and stuff. It's not a complex skill to figure out and it was a lot faster than swinging wildly and hoping to build your attack back up. I was simple but I was not stupid.

Now you make me feel stupid. I was mostly using flex/slide for defense and charge to get enough initiative to get advantages when I started on world 4 again.

Combat is complex and there is no one right way. Building advantage over an opponent to improve your weight against them is a good strategy too. It always depends on how your opponent is fighting. You must be responsive to their strategy and out-maneuver them. This means lots of training, lots of fighting, lots of close calls, sometimes dying, and learning to run away to fight another day.

If my opponent ever valor strikes me and I'm doing poorly in the fight I book it, for example. That's going to be my biggest opening to freedom.

To be honest there was still so much I was learning about combat through W4 and W5. When I hear stories of players who can fight mobile and juggle opponents I'm left in awe. When I take the mantle up again I will definitely look to spar whoever I can and theory craft when I cannot fight. Knowing just when you push, how, and why can be life or death when you're out-skilled or out-numbered.
