Combat and PVP

Postby Muffy » Thu Sep 29, 2011 10:16 am

Hey, I've been browsing through the forums debating on trying this game but I want someone to confirm something for me.

Is the combat and PVP skill-based or stat-based? As in, can I beat someone who has a character with very high stats on a new character because I'm better than him or will they just one-shot me? Really tired of playing gank-fest sandbox games where a person can be braindead and beat you just because they have higher numbers...

It's based on a square root function so someone with 300 Unarmed Combat isn't Too badly outmatched by 500 Unarmed combat. That said there's a huge meta game around combat because of its complexity. Most of the top players keep their mouths shut on their strategies though because knowing how to fight well means you have the upperhand against even small armies.

Someone with 1,000 Melee Combat is going to crush someone with 10 Melee without any contest though, so don't expect this to be a purely action based game.

Don't expect to meet people in pvp very often. Most people either come at you with a hunting party or flee from you if they're alone. With perma death, no one wants to risk dying.

Until you learn some secret kung-fu shit that the vets are keeping to themselves it's all about grinding stats. And even then a person with higher stats/skill value will have a better chance against you, no matter the square root function.

To my knowledge, some of the finest combatants joined the game in w3/w4. From what I've heard even painhertz is alright at combat and he joined in w5. The vets are not the only source of knowledge. There's just little to no incentive to teach other people how to better kill you.

Make some allies and you'll learn wonders.

This may just be me but: Perma-death + Steam-rolling anyone lower than you = Poor game design. Is there anything stopping them from doing this once they get bored of actually playing the game and just want to kill people for the 'fun' of it?

Also, 5,000? What? Is there no stat cap on this game? How long have those people been playing, is it even feasible to catch up?!

Sure, criminal scents. You can track down criminals and force-summon them while they're offline to kill them if you have access to their hearthfire. This, of course, leaves scents too and it becomes a dangerous game of back and forth.

No stat or skill caps but once again, you're paying exponentially more for exponentially less. If you've never seen an exponential curve or square root curve then come back here once you've finished trigonometry.

Sure, it's not hard to catch up if you're willing to build up an economy to do so.

I've played since the beginning of world 4, almost 8 months now. Also? I suck at combat. lmfao

Been meaning to get Valten or Nao or someone to teach me but for the average opponent, rush to 6 flex and punch works fine. lol

I take that back, the average person runs the second you either shoot at them or attack thereby negating any defense or armor bonus so just plain old punch works.

Woops, I'm not sure why I thought you had only started in w5 then! Oh gosh, please tell me you're at least using Special Maneuvers in combat? Is Flex+Punch really a winning strategy in the current combat scene? I find that a bit sad but oh well.

I could be entirely wrong but the way I see it? there's about 35-50 players who know the combat system, everyone else punches 4 teh win. Sound about right guys?
