Why the recent drama confuses me

Postby Koz » Mon Sep 28, 2009 2:03 pm

I thought that your skill values limited the quality of items made. Such as, if i were to have a cooking skill of 10, then i could not cook anything higher than that value, no matter the ingredients. And this seems to be reflected in the wiki.

But then, how did those wayneville guys make things with quality in the millions? I know they had that uber coal, but shouldn't their skill values have severely limited their crafting output?

Or is my understanding of the quality system flawed? Please help me to understand, either way.

It's basically averaged out, with skill value included.

In fact, your skills don't limit the quality. If the quality you'd get without using your skills would be higher than your skill value, the quality is averaged with the item quality and the skill level.

An example: Smithing lvl 20, 6 pieces of Wrought Iron with quality 50. Let's ignore the Anvil and the Smithey's Hammer quality. You'd get q 50 Chainmal Shirt, but it's higher than your Smithing. So it will be averaged, which means the resulting Chainmal Shirt will be q (50+20)/2 = 35.

The higher your skill, that means that the quality of the item you are producing will be higher. So lets say you have high farming and high survival/foraging

You get q10 seeds from another player and plant it in soil, the soil and your skill increases the likely end quality of the item. So they could be higher quality and you can repeat the process to effectively level up the resources. giving them more value, and allowing better foods to be made.

Also, the higher quality items you produce provides higher LP. So hunting is not the best source of LP anymore. improving your skills and choosing a focus in trade will.

You become a powerful tailor, people will give you skins, all you do is sit back. You can take money or a few strips of leather as payment.

It's really up to the individual

Pretty accurate, except soil doesn't influence crop quality yet. IIRC, they said it will once they introduce fertilizers.

Skills never increase quality, they'll only decrease it if your skill level is to low.

My understanding was:

1 - Raw materials limit quality
2 - Low skills will cause you to lose quality from your raw materials
3 - Seeds and silk moths (basically anything that breeds) gain quality via genetic mutations

I don't believe you can take 4 quality 10 pieces of leather and use them to produce a quality 11 piece of armor just because your sewing skill is over 9000...

Would a dev care to comment on that?

This is what I thought it was as well.

I think that's right, theTrav. You should maybe notice, that Moth quality is also influenced by the Herbalist Tables and the Leaf quality in both ways (at least the Herbalist Table can increase Moth/Silkworm quality).

Edit: I don't know if you count wood as a raw material, but it's possible to increase the quality of boards with the a better saw. However, it doesn't work with blocks.
