In H&H it is a rough life, you have to fight tooth and claw for everything you have and fight even harder to keep it so I find it strange then a very valuable resource is ignored or at times simply destroyed. I am talking about Newbies.
Love them or hate them new players will always be found around the world of H&H - chasing bunnies, drowning and unable to see at night. Then there are also the returners who have been away from a world or two and who make ten baskets before wondering why they are gaining no LP.
They are the defenseless, they are the lost, they are the ignorant destroyers of Nodes, they are...useful.
So before you shoot at that little cloth clad figure read on and maybe gain a new perspective.
Spotting
Spotting a newbie is not too hard with their cloth clothes, clogs and silly hats. Some might even be nude and complaining about thorns in their feet (these are best put down as they clearly have mental issues and are unable to read the wiki/fourms). But did you know you can roughly tell how old a newbie is by what they are waring? Of course these are only rough guidelines and it is easy for a more experienced player to dress as a newbie.
Cloth + carrying a torch = fresh to this world, their HF should be close
Cloth + carrying a torch and a stone axe = fresh/a few minuets old
Cloth + carrying a stone axe and a bone saw = few minuets old/ a day old
Cloth + carrying a stone axe and a bone saw + waring bunny slippers = a few days old (may or may not have nettle clothes)
It is at the bunny slipper part that you can move on to the next step as they have shown they can survive and read the wiki/forums and it is a good sign they are not just an exploring Alt.
Taming
Taming newbies might seem easy at first. Give them a little to eat, a few throw away seeds, maybe a back pack and you have a friend for life. The problem is getting them to stay still and accept your gifts. A lot of new players, especially those who have played a little before hand, will run or hearth as soon as they see another player. This is of course understandable with the way most Newbies are treated by other players. Saying hello, introducing yourself and making sure you don't get too close are your best tools but even that might not be enough to tame some Newbies.
Once you have their attention it is at this point you can start to try and identify if this really is a newbie or a noob. Noobs look and act like Newbies at first glance but there are very easy signs to distinguish them. Noobs will always ask for more were as a Newbie will just be grateful for what ever you give them, even going so far as to try and offer their help or give up the very few Curios that have. Noobs will also try and get close to you if you are in a boat or will ask if they can 'take a look around' your home or village. Newbies on the other hand will likely stay wary for a while and still be unsure if they can trust you until you have chatted with them a little more.
Needless to say, ignore/memorize the Noobs (or kill if that is your thing) and kin the Newbies (that way you know the ones you have tamed)
Uses
Tamed Newbies have many uses all depending on what they want to do in the game. These are mostly for Villages using Newbies but some of these things can be done by more established Hermits. You see Newbies have something many longer players have lost - enthusiasm - and will often be happy to do tasks they you may have long grown bored of.
Farmers - Some might want to farm so give them a load of hemp seeds for them to farm and trade other crop seeds for plant fibers, maybe give them a low Q loom and you can just trade for the cloth. As they get all the crop seeds trade for other things like a scythe or metal plow (plus with the metal plow they will need to continue trading for metal to repair it). Congratulations you now have a workforce to make your banners leaving your village free you work on Q things.
Hunters - Others want to take down the boar/bear that chewed on their other character's head. Great, give them a lowish Q sling and then trade better slings, bone saws and armor for the un-butchered bears they bring in. After all they would only ruin the Q if they butchered it and would never be able to make the Q of items you can. This way both sides get a good deal.
Early Warning - Newbies love building their homes along the water but this can be helpful for a village as raiders just cant help but hit them. Having a few tamed Newbies around your area will give you more eyes to spot these trouble makers and wipe them out before they get established and start causing you problems.
Scent gathers - If you miss the joys of killing Newbies then having a few tamed still might not be a bad idea. Newbie settlements tend to be easy targets to steal from so you will soon find you have lots of scents to track from their places. Now you can kill and feel that you are doing something good as well.
Curo gathers/ foragers - No village has enough time to go out foraging for all the Chants/ ant curos or rarer things like bluebells and mushrooms so let the Newbies do it. Instead of spending a fortune and crossing the map for bulk trades just have your local minions...I mean friends do it for you.
So there you go next time you see a little new player making their first bone saw or spending an hour killing a bear stop and think for a moment before you take aim...you might be shooting yourself in the foot.
