Noob Hunting

Postby NotSure » Fri Jan 20, 2012 4:17 pm

Ive read through the forums and have noticed that a lot of people love to hunt and kill random new players. Since the server is down I figured I'd post this to get more in touch with the mindset of a noob hunter.

What is it that drives a person to kill a noob?
What does one gain from killing a noob?
What is your preferred method of killing a noob?

(Also this isn't a complaint thread, Although I am a new player I have not yet had the luck of meeting one of these people yet, I'd just like to understand this phenomenon so that in the event I do encounter one I would better understand them and maybe even survive the ordeal.)

Please be as detailed as you can, This thread is for purely scientific purposes.

All I know is that people love to cause other people pain.

Just last night someone raided my little fort and took my boat, about 5 tanning tubs, and all my carrots because it wasn't covered by my claim by JUST a sliver. It's my fault for not having the leftover LP to finish it(a problem which I corrected already, so eff off thieves). But yeah, I digress.. murderers pay 130k LP for Rage AND Murder.. they might as well use it?

I never met any noob hunters all my time playing in world 4. and currently started world 6 and only met a couple of people, none of whom were remotely assholes.

at least it makes people consider the survival aspect a bit more, knowing what measures to take to protect themselves and their properties, which is kinda the point of this game

Like people have said, some people are just horrible for the sake of it. IMO it is always a horrible thing to do, but there are certain reasons why it is "optimal" to kill other people in your area:

1. Everything that the newbie has. Some of them might even have pearls!
2. The newbie stops foraging in your local area, this hypothetically gives you a better chance of finding flotsams/pearls/bluebells, etc.
3. Immature types might feel that they are cool for killing newbies.

I dont kill newbies (or anyone much really...), I would rather build trade relationships, since IMO they work better in the long run. I killed one by mistake once :S, but that was because his friend did not explain which bear caped guys were the raiders and which were friends... Luckily he only had ~50k lp on that character so I paid him back quite easily.

EDIT: I would say your best chance for survival if you don't have lots of hq water or are not good at boat chases would normally be to engage them in witty banter, since often I guess they are just bored.

this game brings out the worst(and best) in people. because of permadeath and terraformable terrain.

with permadeath you take away the "WoW" death, and thus(if it worked right) people would weigh the outcomes of interaction with other players and such. because of this interaction and the fact the game was meant for villages, politics are the end result(which keeps most peeps here)

with terraformable terrain, you dont just have to kill your "enemy" you can deforest or "de-clay" his area of influence. which is not as bas as a char death(in the old days) but was just, if not more, demoralizing and destructive.(here you just built up your double brickwalled village and some bunch of A-holes kills your Q70 claynode because you didnt claim/wall it off. the clay node was the only reason to have a village in that vicinity. all them hours of makin the kilns/ovens.houses are now down the drain cause you need to move to another "good end game" rescource. but now your most likely gonna have to try to take it as most rescources(water/clay/soil) that are 90+ will be owned and protected by an established village.(you usually dont see a hermit on a 90+ rescource node)

I killed a random polish person once. No real reason, I just wanted to see how it felt to take a life. Then I broke all his stuff.

The drive is that they spend so much on rage and murder. However, the truth is they are too scared to fight real fighters so they pick on easy targets.

They gain nothing. True noobs don't have much of anything worth taking. They gain the false nobility of being superior to another.

I don't kill noobs. Sometimes I may need to drive them out of my area, but I do that with words. If that doesn't work, I destroy their little encampment until they go along somewhere else. I remember what it was like to be killed after working hard on a character, so I try not to kill another and ruin their progress unless it is absolutely necessary.

(I do know a noob killer even though I don't agree, so I understand the motives)
