Whatever happened to bandits?

Exactly what it says on the tin.

Also, where are the insane cannibalistic native NPCs?
You see a masterful engraving by Blaze. On it is Blaze, bears, boars, and foxes. Blaze is striking down the bears. The boars are screaming. The foxes are in a fetal position. The image relates to the return of Blaze in the late winter of 2009.

I miss them. :(
They need to roam the hearth, leaving scents of Banditry, and you can hunt them down as a quest.

Or track them to a bandit camp, where you must defeat the bandit king to complete the quest!

There were NPCs?

Holy shit I'm too much of a newb for this rubbish.

EDIT:
And by NPCs, I mean non-hunting fodder NPCs.

Well, we got rid of them. :)

They weren't intended to be to begin with -- they were just the result of some test code I used to try out some of the base pieces of code before I made the actual animals. That's not to say that bandits won't be coming back, though. The question of NPCs is still put on hold, awaiting decision. Before we got all these players and all (:D), we were clear beyond a doubt that there should be NPCs in Haven, but since people seem to be handling themselves fine without NPCs, it isn't as obvious anymore.

pleeeease do put npcs, or at least some sort of vendor stands for villages only (assigned to other people and possibly taxed by the lawspeaker). it would make a great addition to make those coins less useless, and if you let us barter through it it would be awesome too =D

but seriously, how will you ever do the quest system without npcs? <.<

i liked the bandit guys, they looked cool. i wanted one of those masks.

Player driven quests. I have an idea I'm formulating and need to write it down sometime when I'm roasting a bunch of meat. Mostly, bounties, dev approved special PC's etc.

A generic bandit that raids and you can kill isn't an NPC, right? Shouldn't it fall under the "creeps" category?

Because there's always the word "Character" in it, and I haven't seen a single creep ingame with a character :P
