My life as a noob

Postby Vihart » Wed Feb 15, 2012 7:12 pm

This is a story of my life on H&H, ive heard alot of new players complaining that they were constantly getting pwned and harassed by more experienced players. I havent experienced this, well not yet but eventually i probably will. I hope this prevent players from quitting after getting pwned etc, believe it or not there are peaceful areas on the map, you just have to find them and get lucky.

When i entered this world i arrived in an area i couldnt find on the map, always asking stupid questions on the forums (still do), and trying to survive the harsh world of H&H.
At first i did the same things you are or probably did, eating rats(even though they are bad for you), failed when i tried to catch rabbits (your supposed to left click to them then right click when your next to them), built crappy shelters and i was starving half the time.
After realizing that springly root is actually just string i started to build a fishing rod, which brought me loads of food.

The only reason i survived at this point is because i had read the forums enough to know that the majority of people take pleasure in killing noobs so i avoided all people, stayed away from water (only going there to fish - the rivers are like highways for raiders), stayed away from villages or any signs of people, i started to think that if i build/obtain things at this level that they were easily replaceable (making the idea of dying easier).

I did die (im sure everyone dies at least once) by a damn boar that trapped me against my drying rack, stupidly i got to close to the damn thing and it super pwned me.

Eventually i wrote on the forums about building a cave (which for a noob is a stupid idea) so i could hide away from the nasty pesky world until i was stronger and i was contacted by an experienced player who asked me to be his farmer, providing him with food while he worked in his mine.

This is the best thing that happened to me, i was protected by two experienced players, had a palisade around me, gained loads of LP (for a noob) and got familiar with different aspects of the game.

This is the farm, i had plenty to do - farming, feeding, shearing the sheep, milking the cows, churning milk into butter, harvesting the crops, baking, fishing, tanning leather.

But eventually the owner was killed (naughty hearthling had been stealing) and he lost his key to the farm, which made it open to a raid so we all had to move on. At first i didnt catch on, so i hung around a bit until i sent a message to him and he told me the situation.
After learning about this i shit in my pants, i thought a raid would happen any minute, so i grabbed some supplies and headed for a spot to start again. At this point i had the yeomanry skill so i could obtain my own claim, and build a place of my own.

I spent alot of time searching around, trying to find a place that was quiet,

I eventually found a good place(i think), quiet and the area was crappy (no clay nodes etc) so less chance of other people or the big guys settling down here. I wasted no time and went to work, shitting in my pants as i knew a player could find me and pwn me quite easily without a palisade.

I eventually got the pali up and im now currently developing my little home, perhaps later if i get raided or just become more experienced i might decide to join a village.
I also took extra things from the old farm to help with the building and general survival.

If you are having a hard time playing this game due to constant trouble you still have options, you can join a village by posting on the forums, live a paranoid life as a hermit, band together with friends.
Check the guides in the forum, check the wiki, map, and download "ender" (it will help you alot).

I hope this helped any noobs in any way, you dont have to do what i did, but this is an example of someone that managed to avoid the griefers/raiders/bloodsuckingscum for now...

Edit-15th Feb Russian visitor
Recently a Russian left a strange message on a runestone next to my little home, i translated and its simply says "fuck", quite amusing. As someone now knows my position (and hes a bloodcrazed Russian) i decided to leave a runestone next to the one he crafted simply saying "Hi" in Russian - now im hoping he will read it and think, "Ah a fellow Russian like myself i shall leave the good old chap alone" - touch wood he doesnt burn my little sleepy home to the ground lol.

Edit-These are the recent developments of my little home,

Edit- 17th Feb The hunt
I finally decided to put a sling from the old farm to use, i had spare lp so i spent them on marksman (you need around 20 marksman to do any decent damage/aim).
I took the sling with me on a little trip looking for some clay, i saw a boar and figured it would be a good opportunity to test out my skills. I did use a boat to kill the boar (yes i know im a bloody noob) but i wanted to be safe rather than be sorry as ive had a bad experience with a boar before.
Image

After killing the boar i think i became a little blood drunk and headed back out, this time on foot. I found a fox, positioned myself strategically behind a tree stump, aimed at the fox and started the attack. The shot hit and the fox charged towards me, i stayed calm then the fox simply ran around the stump and attacked. After i few good hits, the fox began to run away, i chased the damn thing for ages eventually noticing that it comes back to you and just stands there (pretty damn odd, perhaps its trying to plead for its life), eventually i killed the damn thing.

After some blood, sweat and tears i finally managed to find a clay node, which is essential to building a kiln, oven and a variety of other things. I also downloaded "Daji's graphic mod".http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=19037

As i was wondering around looking for things i could forage to trade with a trading partner i wondered across this (forest sprite), its not the first time ive seen it ^^

Trading
After looking at "apples for oranges" (trading forum) i realized how beneficial trade could be so i opened a thread :
http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=25889

Eventually i decided i was going to play this game right, i wouldnt use an alt or a village idol solely for trading. One day by sheer dumb luck as i was digging for a clay an experienced player approached me and asked me if i wanted a free deer. Now to most most people a dead deer is nothing but id never managed to kill a deer, i accepted and asked if the character would like to trade anything, he told me he did and my first trade was getting under way.

If you (noob) would like to trade without a village idol you have to take risks, heres some things to consider;

- first you have to find a person who is willing to trade things with you, this is risky in itself and you have to make sure that they are not typical scumbags looking to kill you and take your stuff. You can talk to people you meet or go to villages and ask there. (some people advise that you should use an alt).

- Dont act like a noob, for gods sake take off the crappy pumpkin, fox, newsboy hat (some people will kill you for this reason alone, especially the pumpkin hat). I acted indifferent to the person i was trading with in the beginning, so much so that he actually thought i was more experienced than i am. Also wearing bear cape could make you look more like an experienced player.

- Dont give them too much information about yourself, your claim, claims defences, hearth secret (memorize them and add as kin instead).

- If the person your trading with is more experienced than you then the chances are your going to have to go out of your way to make the trade successful, he will most likely choose the position where you will make the actual trade so if its really far away suck it up or dont trade.

- Know the point trading system, know that the value of an item drops if you dont use a village idol, also looking at "apples for oranges" on the forums can give you an idea of how much items are worth. http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=30
In the "apples for oranges" forum you can get an idea of what players like to trade, if your a noob you can trade blueberries for items that you need.
Make sure that you and your trading partner agree with the point worth of each item your going to trade, dont get picky you probably need this trade more than they do and they could easily get another noob to go collect blueberries for them instead.

- Organize your stuff, figure out how many chests your going to need,
if you need only 1 or 2 chests you can just use a boat,
if you need 3 or 4 chests you should consider using two boats (you can sail a boat and carry one at the same time, one boat has 2 inventory slots).
Also for quicker trading swap chests, you drop your chests and they do the same that way you dont have to empty them, so ask if they can bring the same type of chests as you. They might have large chests (lc) so they can just pop everything from your chests into theirs and use one boat

Plan your route, for gods sake dont leave it as a last minute thing to do, if you get lost your increasing the chances of random people coming by killing you and taking your stuff. Look at the map http://algeralith.info/HavenMap/ and find out the exact coordinates where your trading partner wants to meet for the trade.
(This is presuming you know where you are on the map).
If you have two boats tell your trading partner that you need to meet them on water (its easier)

- When you set off to meet up and trade your items you can use an alt (its advised), be careful and when you get to your destination let your trading partner know, dont have weapons equipped (its considered bad while trading). When you actually meet up make sure you or your partner has no weapons equipped, take out your chests and place them on the ground (he/she should do the same) check the items make sure they are the ones you asked for, make sure your trading partner is happy with the transaction then collect your items.
If you came with one boat you can lift the boat and teleport to your HF, Dont forget to put the chests in your boat.
If you have two boats because you had more than 2 chests you can pick one boat up and teleport sacrificing one of your boats(if the chests inside the boat are empty), or you have to boat back to your claim.

- Give a little extra, if you impress your new trading buddy they might be willing to trade with you again, so throw a few decent curios or extra blueberries in there and let them know (otherwise they might think you added them by accident like a noob).

- Let them know that you intend to trade with them again, and ask for certain items that you need. This might make them less eager to kill you, they trade their junk(to you its gold) for constant supply of curios, blueberries or whatever your trading.

- Never under any circumstances cheat/steal/etc your trade partner (presuming hes an experienced player) he will just kill you, you may lose the chance for great future trades, and it might give you a bad name when it comes to trade but you would have to be the biggest noob on earth if you did this.

In the end i ended up with a free 70q stone and a 80q stone axe after my first successful trade, i most likely gained a future trading partner and the trade itself was great.
Trading with experienced players is risky, its like walking into the lions den, there is always a chance you will get mauled but if you pull it off you can get items that would take lots of game hours to obtain yourself.

It sounds very like my first time playing :)

Good luck, you will eventually probably get bored of hermitting and join a village, but I always have fond memories of that period :)

Being a hermit is fun and rewarding. It's not easy, though, and it's not for everyone.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

you're one of the best noobs i've seen in a long time :) most wouldn't be able to just pack up and leave a nice place like that, should have taken some sheep or the cows or something though
