My story (prologue)

Postby Vihart » Sun Feb 26, 2012 12:49 pm

After reading "The shadow of murder" by BangPow http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=7
i decided to post my prologue for a story ive been writing.

The story is about a journey of the "student" searching for his teacher (druids), and is set in the time of the Celts in Britain. Through the whole story the student
bumps into several creatures of lore (mostly stories of creatures from Scotland and Ireland). The druids in the story do not wear white robes or wear leaf crowns (there is no actual evidence), the story is going to have whatever facts we have today about the Celts as a foundation for the story but will have layers of magic from local stories of magic on top.

The druid in the prologue is the students teacher. (This is a first draft so im sorry for any mistakes etc).

Prologue
Britain at the time of the druids.

The druid and his Celtic companions rowed their boat through the waves, being careful not to stray too far from the coast and not get too close to smash into the rocks. They had nearly finished their journey and were now travelling home to Damnonii lands.
The men talked about things of no great importance, until Lonan, one of their companions hushed them.
"I thought i heard something".
The others strained to hear, after a long moment one companion replied, "its the sea friend, its playing tricks on you".
The druids brow furrowed, he knew of many strange creatures on his beloved homeland, but decided not to say anything, "If i show need for concern it will only put fear into them, perhaps it was nothing and besides we are getting close to our destination", he thought.
"There it is again, listen !", piped up Lonan in a hushed tone, all the occupants of the boat fell silent and listened, they could indeed hear something, it was a womans sweet voice above the sound of the waves. The men looked at the druid, like a child looks to his father for protection "What me?, i cant help you im a man of healing and lore", thought the druid, he was just as worried as they were.
"What is it ?", the men asked.
"Im not sure", he said truthfully, he had leanrt many new things on this voyage and he wasnt sure what the singing could entail.
"It could be the voices of the dead", said one.
"Or it could just be a woman on the coast", said another.
"Thats no voice of an ordinary woman", replied Lonan.
They all fell silent listening to the singing backed by the sound of the sea, not even the druids could compare with the divinity they were all feeling and the druids were the only direct connection to the Gods. The boat rounded a cliff and there in the bay were creatures of such beauty that any anxieties, fear or concern were muted. These creatures were women, well half woman, they were known as Morgen Mermaids, they wore their hair long their flesh uncovered, inviting the men with their smiles.
The most beautiful of the Morgens sang perched upon a moss covered rock while the others eyed the men in the boat.
They slowly drifted towards the party of Morgens, they stared in awe, unable to avert their eyes, the presence of such creatures brought out a carnal hunger within them.
The druids sight broke from the amazing spectacle to the water below and could have sworn he saw huge stone structures and gardens. He looked back to find all but of the Morgens had vanished, then suddenly one by one his companions were pulled from the boat into the depths of the water, the sweet voice sang still and he watched his last companion get dragged beneath, he lent over the boat to see friends panic stricken face until he was absorbed in the murk.
The singing had stopped now and he waited staring in disbelief into the water, the surface reflected the sunlight and was soon replaced with the beautiful face of the singing Morgen. The druid gasped in terror before her arms wrapped around his neck and forced him down deep into the cold sea.

The joint Eater.

The druid sat eating his food inside his humble home, suddenly he sensed something was wrong, he could feel magic was a work close by. After a long moment staring at his food it dawned on him, he chuckled to himself as he watched his lunch slowly disappear. He cast a spell around his food and immediately saw what he was looking for, a small chubby fairy sat by the druids plate bewildered and rather shocked that he had been caught in the act. The joint-eater, what fairies of this type are called use invisibility magic to eat their victims food while going unnoticed.
"I would have thought fairies that posses such strong magical ability would find better things to do with their free time", mused the druid.
The joint-eater uncertain, quickly looked around for a means of escape, "pointless", he told himself, "no way i can escape this human".
The druid sensing the fairies uncertainty divided his food in tow halfs, "one half for you and one half for me, next time if you are indeed going to enter my home id prefer if you asked rather than took my food", smiled the druid....

This was just an idea i had for the joint eater and how it might have a place in my story, the joint eater originates from Ireland i think (not sure).
I also wrote several other snippits for other creatures in the story, but im too lazy to add them at the moment.

Thanks for reading ^^
