Because of previous worlds where minor griefers used those hats all the time during raids and trolling, it's a universal sign that you either are an uninformed nub, or are about to go make trouble for someone.
No one's gonna stop and talk to you if you look like a dillweed about to attack someone. And even if they do, it'll likely be so they can purge you from the world or siphon information from you.
And next, be nice. Know that any interaction might get you killed, and be ok with it. Be nice even if he isn't.

The most important thing to do, though, if you do get jumped/robbed/killed... don't go complaining about it. Not ingame, and not here. I don't say this in the typical "QQ more fagget" kinda way, but more in the sense that it won't do you any good to whine about it. Because permadeath is such an important feature of H&H, many players take it as being their 'right' to wander around killing new players for no purpose or gain. They aren't cheating or being unfair in any way-- they are just being assholes. And you never complain to an asshole, because he will just laugh in your face and do it again.
Personally, it's one of the reasons I enjoy H&H so much, despite all the waiting and grinding and watching timers. It's the knowledge that, at any moment, a sword-weilding maniac might come barreling out of the trees, cut you down, and take everything you worked all those hours/days to create. That's adrenaline-pumping danger, right there. And sure, it's a real demotivator when it happens, but only for a while... you'll want to try again soon after.
