Now: About quest system. Discuss.

Postby Errol » Sun Jun 07, 2009 11:58 am

This was the original starter post. But, this thread has been derailed and is now for discussing the upcoming quest system.

So, we were having this discussion at the Dwarf Fortress Heaven&Hearth IRC channel about the progress of the game... One of us guessed that the game progress is somewhat slowed down due to the fact that Jorb, as the only artist, can't create art as fast as the features would come rolling in... First, I'd like to know whether that's the case...

Second, if it's so... we are a community, a small community perhaps, but perhaps we could help... so, the devteam could come in and request art, set a deadline and... perhaps we could take some of the work...

Sorry if this question was unnecessary, or something... but it doesn't hurt, does it?

I understand the idea. I've thought about it myself too, but i now completely disagree. This game is jorb's. It's his style and his baby. We can't take that away from him.

As far as I can tell, the only thing REALLY slowing them down is the difficulty in creating sprites.

So, I don't know, jorb / loftar could do a single animation, and ask everyone to do the rest of the animations for it.

There's always room for optimizations, isn't it?

Though, the update speed is already great.

maybe too great. As long as we get new stuff to do it's fun to play. too much stuff at a time and the span will be shortened.

I fear that the long awaited quest system is being put on hold
because of all the new requests and these rather quick updates.
Not that that is necessarily a bad thing,
but they've spoken of it for months. :(

Besides quests as a tutorial for new players.. what need do you have for them?
you can effect other people/the world plenty without them, and what would seperate them from but another way of gaining stuff/LP/stats?

This quest plan worries me. I really hope it doesn't become like a new, formerly enlightened Runescape clone (Runescape never was enlightened).

This game has been excellent so far. I really like the discussion on trading and coin values. This whole quest system seems to loom over the game. I may be taking this wrong. The quest system might be more player-run than it is coming across as. If it is run by NPCs, well...

I just hope that the quests are not about busy work. Give them useful ones, like say, destroying baskets.
