It's has a release but there are some problems with it. It is being actively worked on, and is in it's alpha stage.

If you do join the forums and want to watch the development, mention that Icefire recommended you ;D

The game is basically a simulation of life in a three dimensional enviroment. Currently the graphics aren't spectacular but they will be polished, I believe, once that some of the kinks in the gameplay is worked out. All of the creatures start out as nothing more than slug type things, but over time they mutate and evolve legs and horns, arms, tails, you name it. They can travel around the map and inhabit new areas of forest. They eat the trees, but some are carnivores/omnivores or are just aggressive and attack others. The carnivores/omnivores may eat the corpses left behind.
Also, there is a mod maker, (not literal mods, that is just the name) where you can create your own your own creature.
It is still very early in development, it's current release is it's first. Look into it if you are interested :)

Interesting, but what's the player influence have to do with anything? Like, looks to me like shit just happens around you and you are supposed to think that it's awesome atm :P Are there benefits to a successful creature yet?

You can't do much at the moment, but you can involve a bit of pressure on evolution. You can murder creatures, force feed them, and move them around. Like I said, it is still really early in development, but the next release is almost out. Here is everything included in the next patch. http://www.speciesgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=9 The first post in that topic holds all of the development info.

Oh dear… Spore. (said in a tone of cynical hatred that can only be born out of the decrepit ruins of long broken dreams)

Yeah, the similarities weren’t lost on me either when I first heard about Spore either, but Species was in development before that: I first dreamt up Species in 2006, and didn’t hear about Spore till 2008. I was dissappointed to realise I wouldn’t be the first to do fully mutable creatures, and worried that I was being overshadowed, but I was also extremely excited to play the game. And then it was actually released…

I’ll have to do a writeup of my opinions of Spore at some stage: maybe even do a compare and contrast. It will involve… adjectives. Possibly even metaphors.

made me lol and i thought "Sim Earth" ... ;) but all in all it sounds interesting!
