how do you get into the first check area? I am pressing fire, but then I die and can't restart.

Do you mean the level select screen?

you have to double jump over the fish to land as the bridge explodes then quick move back and forth to avoid dieing to the plant moster or falling off the clif right next to you. Once at the check point press x. If you die, press r.

If you mean the parachute, you have to time you jump just at the right moment.
