I'm new! and considering dragging some friends in as well... but someone to bounce questions off of would be nice, as opposed to scouring the wiki... and new friends are always nice too (also could be helpful knowing quite how far we should roam to setup without infringing on other's property)

if you have questions, it would be best to ask them in this thread right here in the 'How Do I?' section;

If you're using Ender's client, zoom minimap all the way out, if there aren't any settlements within a few screens, settle down, also consider settling around a water spring to have access to a well, and never settle next to a river.

Area chat is effective within a medium sized area around you, there's also a global chat but rarely anyone ever uses it.

That's the original haven.jar client, you can get Ender's client, or a different modified client from the wizard's section of the forums

Welcome, I wish you the best of luck with your adventures in the Hearthlands!

One quick tip.

http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Brickwall

While if you're new, building one can be a pretty hefty task and there is many other things needed beforehand. Building a brickwall should be your top priority. It makes your settlement a LOT safer than a palisade wall, since practically everyone can bash those down with their bare hands.

If you plan on investing a good amount of time in this game, check out the things you need to build and obtain for one. All of that you can find on this wiki

If you're not too worried about that though, just have fun. That's what it's all about :D

That info is madly appreciated... not that I expect interlopers... but knowing you're "secure" just FEELS good ;)

Edit: are warthogs always insta-KO?

Boars are actually fairly difficult foes and even an experienced player will need 70 Unarmed combat or 110 Melee combat to handle them up close. Learning how to avoid stealth boars and hunt at a range is a big part of survival.

It's worth noting that Deer and Bears are actually significantly more difficult than boars.
