Is the server down, or is my computer slow? I see people on the homepage on (about 175) but I can't connect to the server.

It's not down as you can easy see at Portal bottom...maybe your Providers routing atm just takes to long...as JoCo said: Try again...i just logged in

Happens to me quite often, Just do it a fair few times and it will eventually connect.
