Opinions about the Felix Baumgartner jump

Postby Dill » Mon Oct 15, 2012 7:19 pm

For anyone that doesn't know, Felix, a 43 year old Austrian skydiver, recently set 3 world records. These of which include, highest skydive (128,100 ft), highest manned-balloon, breaking the sound barrier with his body (843 mph), and 17 seconds shy of the longest free fall. I for one think this is an incredible achievement. I'd like to hear your opinions on it.

I'd love to see how much it cost to do this stunt and how many hungry families could eat instead of some Austrian idiots falling through the air......

While it was certainly cool / neat, a lot of the people around the internet (facebook/twitter) seem to be absolutely freaking out about it thinking it's the most amazing coolest thing mankind has ever done. The fact is that the exact same thing was done 50 years ago. While it's definitely impressive to think about a human body breaking the sound barrier, it's really not that much of a technical marvel. You go up high enough where there's no wind resistance and you jump out. It's pretty simple stuff.
