Lifting weights I alternate every month (currently), I'll lift one month for strength and the next month for endurance. I use different amounts when I strength train, when I'm lifting for endurance I use 10lbs dumbbells. For curls I'll trade the weight back and forth until I get to my 6th set then I'll let my arms rest for 3-4 minutes, then stop at 12 sets and rest, etc...
Exercise_________________Strength_______Endurance
Inclined Bench Butterflys____4-5 sets_______10-12 sets
Overhead Presses (dumbbells)_5 sets________12-16 sets
Curls (dumbbells)__________6-9 sets_______24-36 sets
Wrist Curls (dumbbells)_____6-9 sets_______24-36 sets
Standing Butterflys (dumbbells)_4-5 sets_____10-12 sets
Legs
Calf Raises_______________6 sets_________10 sets
Leg Extensions____________6 sets_________10 sets
Leg Curls________________6 sets_________10 sets
I see better results from bench butterflys than bench presses, so I don't bother with them. I never have a spotter anyway. I love doing squats, but my knees can't take standing squats (I was in a car wreck a few years ago). Squats on a machine are not so bad, I just prefer leg extensions. I don't do deadlifts or any other risky way of lifting weights, I like to be careful. My uncle was hurt while doing deadlifts, I won't do them.
My best advice to anyone wanting to lift weights is to take things slow, or your body is going to make you pay for it (it will discourage you from lifting weights for a few days, weeks, or ever). Take your time build up slowly. Also be careful of advice you take, some people try to push too hard/quickly only to have that person fail and not want anything to do with weight lifting. I use to read and go by weight lifting books when I was younger, I've also been so sore that I wasn't hardly able to get out of bed

Last year I started getting serious about lifting weights and I did only Endurance type exercises for 6-7 months (until I kept getting sinus infections and I took Levaquin which gave me tendon problems in my left leg for several months screwing me out of work and exercising). I did them 5 times a week, starting in August and by the time November came around my blood pressure went from 118/95 to 90/65 (after my medicine was reduced to stabilize it). In November I had to actually got to the ER because my blood pressure was too low 60/40, my doctor had to reduce my blood pressure medicine. In January my doctor had to reduce it again (he reduced it again two months ago). I'm almost off of my blood pressure medicine
