Brand new to the game.

Postby formalrevya » Tue Nov 13, 2012 1:16 am

Judging from a casual look around the forums and some exploring I did through the barely tolerable lag in game, That seems to be a very rare thing around here.

It seems like this is one of those rare gems of a game that I stumbled upon just as it was starting to wind down, As I have an unfortunate habit of doing.

But I thought I'd pop my head in and make myself known none the less.

My biggest question, though one that might make me a bit unpopular with some players out there.

What is the ruling on taking things If I'm fairly certain the people they belong to haven't been around for a while? Is there any way to verify this before I help myself to someone's hard earned goods?

I'm not out to become a thief, But I feel there's a difference between robbing an active player and looting long abandoned buildings for materials I'd be hard pressed to create on my own. And Given the amount of skeletons I've found laying about, I'd be a little hesitant to make myself known to any of the locals.

Other than that, is there anything that a newbie such as myself should know about the game that isn't explicitly stated on the starter guides?

People will track your scents, regardless if your intentions were hostile or not. My advice, don't leave ANY scents and try and stick around till one day when Jorbtar finally return to their love child.

Best of luck, kaizokuroof.
I had a retardedly huge signature and have gotten this embarrassing replacement to show for it.

Welcome to the game!

It's true... even if the scent you leave is harmless and victimless, someone who simply loves killing for it's own sake might use your scent to hunt you for sport. Most people are not like this, but it only takes one to ruin your day. Unfortunately, most major factions these days don't exile people for killing randoms. So it has been a rather chaotic year in haven. Take care of yourself out there.

I am happy to see a new player around :)

Things you should know about the game... well most of my advice has to do with protecting yourself.
Until you have a ferryman's ring, avoid swimming. It's lethal.
Build your main base away from high-traffic areas such as rivers. You want to minimize the number of aggressive guys who see your home.
Don't settle too close to other active players. Even in the frendliest cases you'll still get in eachother's way when you expand your settlements.
Log out with your most valuable items in your inventory to keep them safe from theft.
Make defense a priority. Don't spend too much time stockpiling things, you need to spend some of that time protecting what you've stockpiled.
For defense get yeomanry, stake claim, palisade, village idol, crossroads, brickwall, double-brickwall in approximately that order.
Don't use a cliff as part of your walls. It doesn't save building materials in fact it costs more. It's also less secure due to possible cliff-bypassing bugs.
Search for rams outside your walls often. Rams take 24hrs to dry and you need to find & destroy them during this time to prevent a raid.
Pay attention to minehole placement because if it is inside your walls it is another point of entry. It will need it's own wall if you build it inside.
Village idols are still useful for solo players. They allow you to trade with anyone in the world and they make you safer by allowing a crossroad system.
Speaking of keys, never bring them outside or leave them in a cupboard/container. Most people use a "butler" / "keyalt" character on an alternate account.
Stop using keys entirely once you get crossroads set up. The crossroad system is much more secure.

Thanks for all the advice guys. It seems the best thing I can do right now is stay on the move and avoid people as often as I can. While a huge chunk of the area I'm in has been clear cut, I'm finding a good amount of fruits and nuts out there with which to keep myself from starving, and until I get my LP up, there's not much point in me trying to build any shelter. Hopefully if I do run into anybody, they'll be indifferent to me provided I don't hang around.

Work a little on a secondary toon until it gets to have the vandal skill, place its hearth fire far from your home (even in the same place you want to steal from) so it is not tracked to your living place.
Be carefull that stolen items get scented, so leave them in this alts inventory until the scents vanish (wiki explains how long they last).

I believe clay, soil and water dont get scents except for the ones that get to be on the land when you dig or collect, so this stuff I think you can use imediatly, but Im not sure.

Maybe out there are good will players that can explain this better. :D

There are far fewer active rangers on now so the odds of anyone stumbling on your scents is low. Go ahead and loot to your hearts content as long as you remember that this is a survival game and accept the consequences of your actions should they come. =)

few rangers right - but in some areas there's a "neighbourhood watch" that also takes care for inactive ppls places!

a good food source early game is chicken and rabbit meat, since they're easy to catch (stand close, right click, makie sure u have a four space empty inventory space, that should secure a meal), also fishing. Theres a lot of different types and it's easy to do, just look for areas in a river where there's jumping fish. If you need some I have like 4 cupboards of perch from a trade some time ago which has been unused since no one needs it anymore in my town.

I would really suggest talking to people you may meet, currently in the state of the game as it is, the likely chances of you meeting people is very very slim, so if u do get approached talk and see if you can get a friendhsip going, this game isnt the msot exciting without people around you. plus as a newbie player you dont have much to lose if the person ends up being a dick and kills you.

good luck:)

At the current moment my priority is finding a few rabbits. Without a bone saw it seems that the LP I invested in carpentry is simply going to go to waste.

Is there any way to tell where I am in relation to other players in the world? I've found plenty of settlements but so far they've been devoid of people and most of them have a collection of dead bodies near by.

I've found myself near a land called Dis, but like I said, there's no one around and I'm rather stuck on the island I landed on due to my lack of boat building ability.
