Question about copyright

Postby MaGicBush » Mon Dec 24, 2012 5:25 am

Well I tried to give this game a shot a while back and was unable to get past the insane lag. I have currently thought up a new game and started working on a new engine. I am wondering though if it would somehow possibly infringe upon this game if I only took the basic concepts such as surviving and trying to work your way up to a nation. Is anything in this game actually copyrighted that I should avoid on my adventure(besides the name of course)? I would keep the game f2p besides donations for the server costs. I tried looking it up for myself, but was unable to find anything though I did notice the client source-code is available.

This game took the idea from other games that came before all the way back presumably to pen and paper survival roleplay games. In other words, i don;t think the concept is copy writable...

Alright I figured as much, but I just wanted to make sure before we got to far into development of it.

The art is owned by SeaTribe and the engine is owned by either Loftar or SeaTribe. I don't think you're stepping on anyone's toes by making a survival game. =)
Best of luck.

Lol its funny how scared and apprehensive people have become to be creative, all because of the protectionist efforts by large media corporations...

Unfortunately your right, as I have seen to many cases of a group getting sued by some large corporation and obviously it's not something we could afford(of course this is not a large corporation, but any kind of lawsuit would cause us to stop really). I dislike how America has become so dependent on suing however that is another issue for another topic :). We have plenty of new ideas in our current plan to improve upon this basic concept, and so hopefully we wont have to worry. A year down the road when an alpha is in fruition hopefully I(or someone) will be back to let you all know about it :).

I'm hoping it blows over sooner rather than later. If they've instilled any lasting fear in anyone then organizations such as the IRAA have been more successful than they have any right to be.

I've always wondered, can you copyright game formulas and mechanics...

Depends if there is artistic precedence. If you are the absolute first person to ever imagine and implement an idea then you can. If there is proof that similar or identical ideas existed prior or concurrently then your copyright is null and void. The broader an idea the harder it is to copyright it.
