Opinions on a static defense item for Hnh?

Postby DarknessReaper » Tue Apr 02, 2013 8:25 am

Greetings,
With the recent aboose of bug rams etc etc, I almost wish Jorbtar would bring in something like braziers from Salem. (If there was no bug rams, then no.)

But atm what do you think? Even if it required you to man it or something like that, burning pitch from brickwalls or something. I dunno.

What's everyone think?

Bot Exploits would be easy enough to do, I would recommend something to make archers more useful/valid in it's stead.

Just fix bug rams. Having a static defense would end up making vaulting even easier and might take away the fear that someone can come along and take everything from you while you sleep. The more ways we have to defend ourselves the more that is taken away from the experience.Think of it like this, its a game of deterrents, like nuclear deterrents in the real world.

From what I've read on the forums at least this bug ramming thing seems to be a pretty big issue. Adds fear in the game in a highly unbalanced and unfair manner where it simply shouldn't be. Would be best just to fix it outright like every other bug.

Bugrams are only something to be feared if you only check your walls standing inside your walls. If you really fear getting rammed patrol your walls from the outside. The cost of dragging a bugram from 200 tiles would be extreme and often unhurt of so most often they are placed about 50-70 tiles away from your walls knowing its harder to spot if someone only patrolled the walls from the inside.

I dono why jorb/loftar doesn't want to fix the bugrams but as stated before its an easy fix. Until then just patrol your walls from the outside.

I seriously doubt it's a case of "they don't want to fix the bugram"

If it is indeed 'an easy fix', then I fail to see why it hasn't been addressed either. I've always tended to think that they are just waiting to fix all the bugs/exploits when they return to Haven and rework it.

A reworking i'm dreading tbh, i'm afraid they will spoil Haven by incorporating idea's from Salem - which brings me back to the topic - no braziers, I hate them and they are not hermit friendly. One of the (many) things that attract me to Haven is the ability to defend yourself adequately as a hermit, having to refill the braziers from all angles of a large village when under a group attack is going to prove unviable as a lone defender.

The core of the issue is maintenance and labor. Think back to w3 and your maintenance meant checking walls daily for repairs and to make sure that no rams were being built nearby. This meant maybe an hour of burning bricks a day to ensure your safety. Cue Salem and realistically keeping your coal clamps running to produce the materials that you need is a multi-day ordeal. Either you're keeping it up constantly or you're toast.

The ideal solution isn't going to produce more maintenance, is going to pit offense against defense, and will significantly drain the offense so that repeated assaults are costly and nonviable.

What I'm hearing is that people want defense, but most people think a bandaid is going to do very much. Realistically, every raiding faction has a pile of secret exploits they've been hoarding so that they can continue to bugraid once bugrams are fixed. This is a non-ideal solution to the problem and will do nothing to appease any side and just generates unnecessary labor where there is already minimal labor available.

In my opinion claims need to be able to hurt intruders on their own in some fashion, but turning it into an arms race means loading more chores onto players rather than providing actual fun content.
