The server just did... something

Postby btaylor » Sat Oct 24, 2009 2:12 am

I was at my new settlement (I had my hearth fire built) which is quite a distance away. Well, the game server did something. It crashed maybe. The website was down for a bit and I couldn't log in for a bit. A bit being about 5-10min. Well, I couldn't click the button that lets you log back in where you logged out. So I said to myself, "Okay. No big deal. I will just log back in at RoB and just travel back to my hearth fire. That's when I found out that "I have no hearth fire to travel to." What the F?

How am I supposed to get back to where I was when my travel weariness won't even go down so I can get back to Swampcrazed and walk the additional 10-15min to get to my home?

You may just have to walk it. If you go to the City of Brodgar, slightly to the North-West of RoB there is a way to walk through. And then slightly to the North-East of the city is a direct road you can take to SC. At slow run on the road it won't eat stamina and will take you about fifteen, maybe twenty minutes.

And then you get to find out what happened to your hearth....

Holy crap, so it was a rollback? I finally made it back. My kiln and stuff is gone plus I can't enter my house.

Well, indeed. The server did... something last night. I just crashed -- the entire system, that is. Of course, since it crashed completely, there are no logs of the incident for me to examine. It is very frustrating, and it is all the more aggrevated by the fact that it has actually happened before. The only thing I know is that it was a kernel panic, as indicated by the blinking caps- and scroll-lock LEDs. It should be said that there is a driver which I suspect for being bad, so I may investigate into that.

If it was a kernel panic, it probably doesn't have anything to do with the game server anyway. Anything interesting in the kernel core dump? (There'd be a panic message, at least.)

I haven't had any kernel core dumping set up on the server, as it hasn't really been a recurring problem. Now that it's happened twice, though, I might consider it.
